Guys, my wife is getting geared up for cowboy action shooting. YUP! A women who is a serious shooter! Small miracle today isn't it? :) She has her proper handguns and shotgun, all her reloading gear etc., but we were wondering if she can use her original Remington Model 14 1/2 pump action rifle in 44-40 or is she going to have to buy yet another firearm? I can't find it in use on the net anywhere although I see a few 14 1/2's for sale saying "desired by cowboy action shooters to go with their single action revolvers in the same caliber". Any help would be greatly appreciated! From what I have found for her, it must be a firearm design prior to 1899 PERIOD! I am wondering how sticky they are on that issue.

My understanding is that in order to SASS compliant all firearms must be of a pre 1900 design. In the case of rifles the most popular are lever action Henry1860 & 66, Winchesters or clones 73, 83 & 92, 94, 95 there is also the Lightning which is a pump action rifle.
Having said all that I would think most club will probably allow her to shoot with what she already has, until she decides what she really wants to use.
Ultimatly it's all about having fun 1st.
So have fun and be safe.

Thanks guys. Too bad, she really loves that rifle. Guess I'm going to start searching for something in 44-40 in a lever action for her. I know a few friends who have originals they occasionally hunt with. Guess I'll have to go see what I can find so she can get prepared for the season.

Go to SASSnet.com and download the CAS handbook and read it before you spend money that could end up being wasted. They list authorized firearms in detail.

I will check them out Cagunman. Thanks. She's already shooting a pair of Uberti revolvers. May have to add another Uberti to the line up. I just checked out the handbook Garand. thanks. that answers every question we ever had and then some!

Yes, we'll get to meet sooner or later Cagunman. Watch for a new gal named Annie and you'll find me somewhere nearby. She'll be hanging around with one or more of the Annapolis Valley bunch. Not sure yet if she'll be at Truro, but maybe New Minas. We have a lot to get ready yet and still have to deal with getting her a lever action. Then she needs some serious practice time. Too many expeditures this past month to buy another new firearm at the moment by the looks of things.
