Now that PG R&G is trying to get cowboy shooting going.......again - I am looking at gearing up.......again :D

SO I am wondering how the Chapparal rifles are holding up?? Seems like they are selling a lot of them as most models appear to be sold out on the Marstar site.

Are they decent? I know they aren't Ubertis but they still cost $850 so I would expect a reasonable product.

I would visit some of the SASS forums, Chapparal rifles don't have a good rep there. It is my understanding that a well know Cowboy gunsmith in your province charges more to work on a Chapparal than a Uberti because of the problems he has encountered in the past. Spend the money on a Uberti, and you'll never have to buy another Cowboy rifle, unless you go into the side matches.

x2 on this. I went the Rossi route to start and although it was a decent gun, when I switched to my Uberti it was like night and day. This beauty is sweet as can be right out of the box. No need to tune or mess with it in any way, and the build quality is outstanding. You will pay more - but you will only pay once.

Unless you don't mind buying twice, you cant beat the following set-up for reliable long term use.

.38 Uberti '73 or '66 or 94 Marlin cowboy lever rifle ( Should hold min. 10 rounds
2- .38 ruger vaqueros ( You decide what barrel length. (5"+ will be easier to sight)
Minchester '97 pump or any of the new SxS coach gun or short barrel SxS Most of these will need a little work to tune them up and make them eject easily.
Leather from Black Hills is reasonably priced and they offer great shipping to Canada. Rudy is good to deal with.

I have suggested the .38 cartridge for economic reasons and easy recoil.

Thanks guys :)

I have shotguns already so that is covered.

I am thinking I will go with the Uberti `66 in .38Sp. for a rifle.

Right now I am torn between going all out practical with the Vaqueros or looking extra cool with a pair of Uberti`s Richard Mason Navy conversions with 4.75 barrels......hmmmmmmm............

I've been shooting a Marlin M1894S in .44 magnum for 14 years now and just purchased a Uberti '73 from Rusty Woods Trading Company in .38 Spl and I've been very, very, very happy with the purchase. I'm converting from .44 mag to .38 spl, simply because that is what my wife uses and this means less reloading in different calibers. Mind you, I have the Marlin available for when I shoot "Wild Bunch" matches in the US.

I agree the conversions definately get style points. The Ubertis will work fine as long as you make sure they are properly timed. Even then, if you shoot 2 handed they will break down. The old Colt copy Single actions were just not built to go as fast as we work them with 2 hands. However if you shoot duelist or another of the one handed categories they will essentially last forever.
Just my 2 cents woth.

As far as pistols, I'm pretty impressed with Pietta lately. I bought two used Ubertis in 44-40 and really I liked my 357 Pietta better. None of that silly safety nonsense on the hammer, closer to the original IMO. Also the case hardening and bluing seemed better on the Pietta. Maybe be sure to handle a Vaquero, Uberti and Pietta before you decide. From what I've heard over the years, the Vaquero will have the greatest likelihood of running well right out of the box and will hold up well.

Rifle, I agree with what the other are saying, I'd steer clear of the Chapparal and either be happy with a Rossi 92 for a year or two and then upgrade to an Uberti 66 or 73, or just bite the bullet and get an Uberti right out of the gate.

Thanks for the input.....much appreciated:)

Yeah I think I will just go with the Rugers and be done with it.

I've been shooting a 73 chaparral for 4yrs now in 45L mostly b.p. loads.I can't say anything bad about it.Never had any problems .I know another with a chaparral who, after a few years had a broken firing pin(can happen to any gun) other than that he liked his also. I found the looks of a chaparral (wood&case hardening)better on them then the uberti's, just my preference. The uberti's are definitely the Cadillac version but if cost is an issue I don't think the chaparral should be over looked,it will get you started and once you start competing you can see what other people are using.Besides what cowboy shooter is happy with just one style of gun, never hurts to have an extra later on for a spare.

I think that Rugers are the smart choice. (maybe because I shoot them) The Uberti rifles are what most of the aftermarket parts are made to fit. I do not think that most of them will drop in to the Chapparal.

Uberti is the way to go I think. I am looking at the '66 because they are chambered for .38Sp.

I also like the looks of the '73. Any issues running .38's in this rifle?

How will you cope if you don't have to drive 6 or 7 hours to get to a match.
See you soon.

Hey Lefty
8-9 hours with the 5th wheel to Kamloops, always worth the trip.
Good to hear that P.G is starting something a little closer to Home.
WE have at least one new shooter here in our area, and I know there is more out there interested in CAS.
Mrs.Watchit and I are thinking of putting on a clinic/fun shoot on here in Houston in the spring.
I have enough steel for at least 3+ stages
When we have something set we will announce here on gun nuts
It will be interesting to see if we can get something going here in the northwest,I won't have to drive so far,
not sure if I'll be able to cope with that ?
Cheers
