CAS, Getting started

Friggin' costumes are nearly as pricey as the firearms. Unless you sew 'em yourself. Pity there are no TSC stores in NB. They recently had decent looking hats on sale. Bought a $70 hat for half price.

My fiancee is shooting her 2nd match next weekend, she bought her cowboy boots at Value village for $15.00, and on friday we bought her a coat for the match there, for $20.00. It pays to shop around if you are shooting unsanctioned club matches. Buy your SASS membership then things get expensive!!

Are most CAS shooters in Canada not members of SASS?

It has been my experience that most shooters that I shoot with are not members of SASS, it is not mandatory for club matches. I shoot about 10-12 Cowboy matches a year.

Airwolf- been shooting a while, I didn't say there is never a bounce back from lead, yup, you're right, I've been hit a few times as well, that is why I wear side shields on my safety classes when I shoot.

SASS- most folks that I shoot with are members of SASS, in fact one is a regional director, but there is now the Canadian Cowboy Confederation (CCC) the web site is up and running, membership so far is free.

Trap- I shoot trap at only one club- the rules are steel shot only. Mind you that is here in Bantario, so I don't know if it is an enviromental requirement or not. Most of the shot in my area Canadian Tire stores is steel, but there is occassionally some 12 Ga lead as well, but normally in larger game sizes. Maybe someone else who shoots trap in Ontario can comment if this is a general requirement or not.

And yes, we do indeed have cowboy action shooting in Ontario!

I went on the CCC site The "Canadian Cowboy Confederacy" is affiliated with SASS. From what little I read it seems like the concept is solid. I was going to sign up for their news letter but it asked what categorie I was in, I'm 50 would that make me a 49er?

Cagunman:

The catagories are described on the SASS web site, (it can get pretty complicated as each catagory can have some dress restrictions in it) but most of us just shoot in our age group. Later on, when you've decide how much you want to invest in your get up, you can change it. On an event by event basis, it doesn't really matter as you can always change your catagory when you sign up to shoot.

Have fun.

Welcome to some of the best fun around and the friendliest people. Regular shopping at the Thrift Store with a creative eye is the best way to get oufitted. I don't know what it's like in the big cities, but I picked up a fringed leather jacket for $25 at the dry cleaners. Something that was forgotten there for over a year. The hardest part for me was picking my alias. Miss Eulalia Canthus, spinster school marm at your service.

Lead shots definitely. Canadian Tire has Federals, 100Rds I believe for $29.95 or there abouts. I'll pop in on Monday and buy some.
Next I'll be looking for a Marlin 1894 Cowboy in .357 with the 20" octoganal barrel probably for xmas, right now it looks like Doc Rowlands is pretty competitive. I'll keep looking.
when you buy your marlin, get it in the same caliber as your handguns, it makes things lesss complicated, you only have to reload for one caliber, which is usually about 20 shotsper stage, plus you shotshells. i ususlly get my shotshells from walmart or Canadian tire.

Out of curiousity, I would like to get a feel for the gun leather out there. I`ve been researching the net and have seen gunleather of all prices. Cabelas is really not that cheap, any makers in Canada that I should be aware of? Right now I like the stuff I saw from G&J Leather, there on the SASS list of suppliers. their stuff is just beautiful and as far as pricing it compares really well.

The Alberta Frontier Shootist Society which now shoots at Rocky Mountain House is a SASS affiliated club. My SASS # 66621.

10 rounds is important as most cowboy shoots require 10 rounds from the rifle.

You want a Marlin 1894 CB- the CB designation is important, and it does add considerably to the price! Good luck in finding one, they are usually sold as soon as they arrive.

Another alternative is the PUMA in 357 mag/38 spl., but it's hard to find as well. For the difference in price, you can get someone to rework the PUMA action for you.

Isn't Doc Rowland down around your way somewhere? You can check his web site.

The Puma M92 is available, I've seen them at Epps and Shooters choice they are a lot less for now. Doc has them but he's about $200 higher than the other 2. I will keep looking. I still think the Marlin Cowboy is the way to go.

Everyone has given you very good advise. Those are great choices. For me I want to keep to a certain period IE: the mid 1870's, so my choices are not so easy. I figured that I would be better off getting the guns I wanted first rather than getting them 5 years from now. In other words I do not want to make compromises. I can afford them (just!), so why not get what I want now.

Uberti 1858 Remington Conversion in .45 colt
Uberti 1875 "Outlaw" in .45 colt
Uberti 1866 or 1873 rifle in .45 colt
Baikal Exposed Hammer Coach Gun 12 ga.

I think the Puma, and the Marlin are excellent choices, but for me I want to portray a period in history with my guns, and how I dress.

Coming off a relatively difficult 6 months, bussiness wise, things were very slow. But now things are much better and this is my treat for a job well done. I don't feel that I'm settling in any way with my choices, I have a brand new Stoeger coach gun deluxe in polished nickel on its way to me now ( my 1st CAS gun), I may have a lead on a NIB Marlin 1894 Cowboy .357 ( thanks to some great people on this site), and then after I've upgraded to RPAL, I'll be looking for a pair of New Vaquero in SS .357 or maybe a pair of Uberti Cattlemen depending whats available. Leather will likely come from the states, have you seen G&J Leather I am soo impressed with their stuff.

With any luck at all I'll be ready to shoot as soon as the snow melts.
