I was in Saskatoon this weekend and stopped by Wholesale sports and picked up a new Marlin 1894 CB in .357, the folks there were very helpful.
So before I screw it up what should I or can I do to get it ready to go out and try to shoot with you CAS folks? My new toy is very stiff but has only been cycled about 4 times. Is there anyting to do to break it in?
I am looking forward to hear from one and all.

A more or less free thing to try is oil the action then put on a fairly thick leather glove so it doesn't hurt the backs of your fingers and cycle it about 100 to 200 times and see if that smoothens it up a little. It should. If you have a set of snap cap dummy rounds it can also be fun to cycle them through and see them spit all over the room... :D

I wouldn't bother going out of my way to buy them though. It's easier to wait and find one of the guys that reloads and just have them make up a set of 10 dummies. It's cheaper and they last longer by far than the plastic or aluminium snap caps. The primer holes can be filled with a dab of hot glue and trimmed off. And I noticed that the local shop has some stuff for turning brass a nice black colour. A nice way to mark your dummy rounds and avoid confusion with the real stuff. And if you get sets with some different bullets or bullet seating lengths you can test for feeding options and issues.

Another trick you can do for the trigger feel is to dry fire it while putting an extra 5 to 7 pounds of pressure on the hammer. The extra force will aid the sear and trigger contacts to polish together a lot quicker. When I did that on my first pistol it made a noticable difference and is easy to do.

Too bad you didn't have a little extra time to come and try it out at the SAWWS shoot as well. We had a great time at the "LAST GASP" Regional match. Lots of shooting and lots of socializing. It was held just west of Saskatoon.

My suggestion for your new gun--Clean it to make sure all the factory gunk is out and go shoot it a lot and enjoy. Clean it regularly, shoot it regularly, repeat as often as you can.

I just picked up a used 1894 in .44 and was thinking the same thing.

Are there any guides out there to tuning them up a little? Or other mods besides the firing pin that was mentioned?

TITANIUM one pc. firing pin.
Marbles flat top sights
full set Wolf competition springs
Safety replacement screw
Flexhone chamber polish hone
Stainless steel mag follower
Lots of time polishing ALL points of contact internaly.
That should just about do it.
