Looking for opnions I have both one New Vaquero and one Uberti Cattleman both 5 1/2 inch I want to buy a pair and have three of one kind. I was told Rugers stand up but I have a friend who has replaced his transfer bars multable times. So I want some feedback on gun breakdowns or lack of.

Although I went with Piettas for my CAS shooting the reason was the same that would make me suggest the Ubertis over the Ruger. And that is that the Ubertis have a more faithful copy of the mechanism. So you get the 4 distinct clicks as you draw back the hammer. I happen to like that bit of authenticity over the more modern design of the Ruger.
Another little issue is the "novel" stamped into the Ruger barrels these days. The Italian replica guns don't have that sort of nonsense.

Through the years since 1972 I've owned a half dozen transfer bar Rugers and have shot beside other cowboy shooters using Rugers for 10's of thousands of rounds and only ever saw one bar break. Rugers usually only require a lighter spring change and they are good to go for Cowboy.
Uberti's are a different story. Right out of the box they will all function okay for plinking or casual target shooting but if you want to make good Cowboy guns out of them they will all require spring changes and action work of somewhat verying degrees. But once they are tuned they are good. My wife and I own 6 of them ,use them regularly, in fact the Rugers have hung on the wall for the last 4 years. Between us we have probably put 12k or more rounds out of them and the only breakdown was my own fault during a tuneup. We both find the Uberti's more comfortable to shoot than the Rugers. I use the birdshead grip with the bump in the backstrap as I find it is easier to keep the gun from rolling back on a hot day with sweaty hands while she likes the plowhandle Stallions
because they are noticably lighter than the Rugers
One more thing to consider is the sight difference. Right out of the box the Ruger has a far superior sight picture however any machinist with a 3/32 mill cutter can open up the V groove on the Uberti and turn it into a square notch. It's not what the old Cowboys used but it's what most sucsessful new ones use.
Your going to have fun Cowboy'n with whatever you choose, their both good,just one requires a little more work to make a race gun than the other.

One other consideration is how does either fit your hand and is it a match for the style of CAS you do. I know I prefer my Old model Vaqueros over my open top Uberti's for gun fighter. As far as holding up or out of the box, my Uberti's both needed work to smooth them out. My wife shot a whole CAS season with out of the box factory New Vaqueros, at least 5000 rds and no issues. She had them tuned and lighter springs installed over the winter and loves them even more now.
Ruger Vaqueros either the new or the old, or the one in the middle would be fine. I have a pair of the Middle set and a pair of the new. There is quite a difference between the 2. Gun fighter is really easy for me on the new's but the older has a different hammer length contour and is a bit tricky. I bought the new's specifically for that reason. I like the 7.5" barrels and 45 Colt or I would have bought one of the SASS sets.
It would appear that everyone "has a story" about the age old question of Uberti vs Ruger (and now Pietta) SAA`s.....Without a doubt, Rugers are very strong, and you will have years (usually) of trouble free shooting....I have 5 Uberti`s, 4 that were bought 18 years ago....One needed a new ejector screw, and another needed the "hand" replaced....Two were "tuned up"....And that`s it...Uberti even has a new SSA that comes tuned up at the factory....Pietta`s are now at par with Uberti`s, so they also would be a good buy....The reason I prefer Uberti is that they are "period correct"....The grips, look, hammer, half #### are made as was on the 1873 SAA`s, and that`s the style I want....Of course there are those that got a "bad" one, by any maker....It happens....To each their own...
Tell your friend that he should send his guns back to Ruger those transfer bar don't normally break that often. I'm buying Ruger!!!
I think I would prefer Ruger if a good deal comes along I would go with either. I don't think Pietta is on par with Uberti at this point. I just want a pair of matching guns. Finding used is hard when you live on a small island. The only used I find are priced close to new. If anyone has some leads PM me

I have two Ruger NV and three Pietta and use both brands depending which costume I am wearing. No problems, love them all. I replaced the black Ruger gunfighter grips with simulated ivory. I have been with CAS since 2005 and have only heard of one Ruger transfer bar breaking and that was a guy shooting in BC.
Sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been looking at them on the web and drooling but since I just picked up a short stroked Uberti 73 I best wait a month or two.
Vaquero's come with two different grip styles and one is called Bisley due to the grip style. the Bisley style grip is also available on Ruger Blackhawks and can be found on many different brands of revolvers. I first saw a Bisley grip on an old Colt. The grip is not flared at the back like you would see on a regular Vaquero or Blackhawk and it's a little longer.
I have fairly large hands and my experience in shooting both is that the Bisley grip is more comfortable in that it tends not to push into the heel of my hand the way the standard grip do.

Why wait, just call your Uberti, the Mrs's back up rifle. It worked for me!!! I've shot "her" backup rifle at 4 matches in Tompkins so far this year!

They are indeed a great gun and the "novel" is no longer out there in plain sight. It is now underneath the barrel in quite small letters. I have a pair of the New SASS Vaqueros in polished stainless and they are an absolutely beautiful pair of guns.
