CAS Side Matches

I was talking with the match director for this years SASS match in Saskatoon, yesterday down here in Phoenix. This year the side matches will be the speed pistol, rifle, etc. Next year he would like to introduce a 5 stage Wild Bunch match.

Another couple of fun sides you may be interested in organizing for team or posse.

We have used what we call the "Great Gopher Shoot" . The targets we use are yellow poly (don't use steel) gas line pipes in various dia. 2" up to 8" and in verying lengths from 8" long up to probably 24". We stand these targets ( they are re-usable many times over) up in any order at verying distances from 15 yds to 25 yds. you can use any # of targets, I think we used about 75 or 80 targets. The posse lines up on the firing line and at the beep they fire at will untill all gophers are down. One team member is allowed to use his shotgun, all other shooters use main match rifles or pistols, their choise. If your empty and there are still targets standing, you reload and keep on going. The targets did'nt cost us anything as they are just garbage bin cut-off's from a gas instalation company.

Another one we use as a team shoot is run the same as the gopher shoot only the target is one 6x6 timber standing upright in a holder . The team keep on shooting until the timber is cut completly off.

My favorite is the gopher shoot altho it is time consuming to reset targets.

I have a humorous antedotal instance that reafirms the statement that "cowboyin sure looks like fun". A few years ago, a young lady (and I won't mention any names) came off the firing line after her first gopher shoot. She was still visibly vibrating and grinning from ear to ear from the adrenalin rush. Her husband payfuly made the coment "you look like you just had the big "O"". Her reply...."IT WAS BETTER"

If you attend Palmers Gulch, they have a long range team shoot side match. Alberta VS BC. Generous targets from around 75 yards to 278 yards. Close to 100 targets all up hill into a mountain. Most of the rams are at the top rail and as you get closer, you're down to turkeys, pigs and chickens. Ussually approx. 50+ competitors shoot this side match. I wait for this side match 364 days a year.

Actually I have done this one before - it is a ton of fun. We did it as a individual timed match but it would really be fun as a team shoot....each team could consist of a pistolero, a rifleman and a scattergun operator. Could be run as a timed match or a team vs. team shootout.... or melee of course.

There is a lot of potential there. :)

I really like the Bullet Barn bullets. Lois and Andy shoot our matches and always support the different matches with donations. There is also a fellow in 108 Mile who makes good bullets. Do a search for OMA Bullets.

...Palmers Gulch.... long range team shoot side match. Alberta VS BC......

Last summer was my first Palmer's Gulch shoot. I'm going back for sure unless my legs are broken... :D The regular match was great. But the long range team mass shoot was definetly the Big Red Cherry on top for the weekend. It raised the bar from FANTASTIC to AWESOME ! ! ! ! !
