Hi all

I jsut got an old inline progressive and I need to find a case activated powder measure for it. I am wondering which one would be better, lee hornady or dillon? I will not change load very often so the ease of changing charge is not a concern to me. As long as it is reasonably accurate and reliable and does not leak powder then it is all good.

Oh forgot to mention I will be loading pistol rounds.

I have used both Dillon and RCBS with good success, the RCBS won't expand necks though, while the Dillon will. Can't say on the others, hopefully others here will have experience with them.
 
That's a good question, best bet would be to contact Dillon, even you purchase locally, they are great to deal with.

I am not sure what all comes, but you will need the die that the measure attaches too, the measure, with an appropriate sized charge bar. The charge bars are adjustable, but they have I think four different size ranges. You'll also need the piece that flares the case mouth for the correct caliber or calibers, I think they call that a powder funnel. To be certain though call Dillon and they will help you.
 
If you already have a powder measure, such as an RCBS Uniflow, then you can just buy the RCBS case-activated kit and mount the Uniflow on that. I reload on a Hornady Projector progressive and an RCBS turret. Have RCBS case-activated kits on both presses using Uniflows with the micrometer stems. Tried the Hornady case activated kit, but found the RCBS worked smoother. Uniflows work great for ball and flake powders, which is all you'll need for reloading pistol. If you want to step up in qualitiy a bit on the powder measure, the Redding 3BR is a great measure and comes with the micrometer inserts already. It could be used on either the Hornady or RCBS case activated kits.

I emailed dillon and this is their reply

Unfortunately the design of our powder measure is not compatible with other brands. The reason for this is that it is activated by the case pushing against the powder funnel, which is part of the conversion kits and that the powder bar is drawn back by the failsafe rod which must be attached to the moving platform.

Just curious which powder die do u use? (I look on the website and they have different powder die for almost every press)

20064 is the part number of the powder dies I believe I use. I use it on a 1050.

I never thought about the failsafe rod. You can order the powder funnels separate from conversion kits.

I know a couple guys running dillon powder measures on Hornady projector presses, and have not heard of any trouble, but I imagine they are running without the failsafe rod.

I believe that rod is just there to return the bar if the springs should fail. If it stopped returning fully you would maybe end up with light charges.

If you are concerned about the dillon, but want a measure that bells the cases, I believe Hornady offers one, but I don't know much about them.
