I trimmed my first batch of '06's, 50 rounds in total. The case length varied from 4.472 to 4.492 (the majority were between 2.480 and 2.490) The trimmer was set at 2.484. Are these differences normal? Accuracy wise what do you guys tollerate?

Thanks,

Alex

Hi Alex,

When I reload, I make sure that all the case are the same lenght. I resize them then trim them all. You will notice that some case expand more then others and some will need trimming and some won't but a good habit would be to verify and mesure them all every time you reload them.

Some new brass are sometimes shorter then the supposed "std lenght". Had some new unfired Win brass and some needed trimming and others were "too short". I do tolerate a difference in lenght on the shorter side, not the longer one.

If you crimp, (from what I have read) you must pay particular attention that they are indeed the same lenght as it could create uneven pressure on the crimp and too much could result on a scrap case, poor accuracy or unsafe extensive pressure.

Good luck :)

If they need crimping then they get trimmed every time. Hey, I find it kind of relaxing:p
I use the Speer manual as a guideline. I trim to the minimum and tolerate halfways to the maximum.

Well, I buy all my cases in lot numbers. After resizing them I trim to the length of the shortest.

They never get near a micrometer or caliper after that, and they are only neck sized.
