Has anyone tried using silica sand (industrial sandblasting sand) in their tumbler? Seems like it should work ok, but would like to hear if anyone's tried it before
Use walnut shells and a tsp of brasso....comes out great..
Brasso contains ammonia, not good for brass.
A capful of Nufinish car polish is recommended.

An old wives tale rises again.
In my time on CGN this has to be the umpteenth time it has surfaced.
Let's say it once again....repeat after me...............BRASSO DOES NOT AFFECT BRASS LIFE.
For non-believers, do a search.
Thank you
I took the time to do a search:

Stress corrosion cracking (SCC)
Stress corrosion cracking or "season cracking" occurs only in the simultaneous presence of a sufficiently high tensile stress and a specific corrosive environment. For brasses the environment involved is usually one containing ammonia or closely related substances such as amines, but atmospheres containing between 0.05% and 0.5% of sulphur dioxide or nitrites by volume can also cause stress corrosion cracking.

Ingredients
The label of Australian Brasso lists "Liquid Hydrocarbons 630g/L; Ammonia 5g/L", whereas the MSDS for Brasso in North America lists: isopropyl alcohol 3-5%, ammonia 5-10%, silica powder 15-20% and oxalic acid 0-3% as the ingredients.[2]
I repeat: Use Nufinish, it contains no ammonia.
Thank you.![]()
Don't use sand. I've tried it. It does dull your brass. I got my hands on some specialty stuff that was so fine it was almost dust. did the same thing. Sand is a no-go.
