I have an empty casing that failed to eject and now is stuck in the chamber.
I don't have a rod to force it out. What do I do know? I tried lightly prying it but to no avail. :(

Anything that will fit FREELY down the bore can remove it.
A section of cleaning rod.a length of steel coat hanger.
Drop it in from the muzzle and gravity will do the work.If it doesn't get it the first time drop it in/down again.

"A length of dowel will also work fine. "
Have you not seen the thread's posted about guy's breaking of WOOD rod's in barrel's?
Get a proper rod,a section of rod,an antenna etc but DON'T USE WOOD!!!!!

In that new Savage? Hmm. Well, good guideline is this~whatever you send down the barrel better be MEANT to go down a barrel, or, be softer than the material the barrel is made of. A proper, one-pc. rod (like a Dewey, you can get 'em at Bass Pro) would be my suggestion.

Out of curiosity, what happened when you opened the bolt and pulled back? Did the rim of the .22 round tear?

Get a rod. You'll need it to clean the bore once in a while anyway.

A Tipton carbon fiber is in the mail, but won't be here for a few days.
I'll see what I have lying around. :)

Yes. The new one. The only Savage I own. The only real firearm I own. lol
It did not tear, it just didn't lock on?

Can you get a knife or similar instrument under the rim of the cartridge and ease it back? I recall a similar incident with my Savage, and that's how I got it out.

Otherwise the rod will work.

Get a coat hanger, and wrap it in a single layer of electrical tape, so it doesn't scratch the bore.

Typically a .22 shell is very easy to pop out and doesn't expand much after firing. With the proper sized flat head screwdriver you should be able to get into the extractor groove in the barrel, and under the rim of the cartridge to get it out.

I guess you never cleaned the gun before shooting it?

How many rounds did you get through?

I imagine it is the packing oil, collecting all of the gunk from some cheap .22lr that eventually built up in the chamber, that caused your issue.

Lesson #1 - always clean a brand new gun, especially the chamber, and barrel.

Lesson #2 - remember lesson #1

I got it out! using a j-hook screwdriver thingey.

I did clean the new barrel, even cleaned out the metal shavings from the bolt slide area.
~250 rounds in 2 hours.

go to the TSC store, buy a brass rod that will fit down the barrel and keep it in your gun case or the trunk of your car. they work good for removing stuck cases or what ever and only cost a few bucks. brass is softer than steel and will not scratch the inside of your barrel.

You could also fill the barrel with liquid (water, antifreeze, canola oil, etc.). Then you only need a short piece of snug-fitting rod or dowel (use a cleaning patch for a tight fit) and one tap with a hammer should pop the case out.
