CASM + Loctite = :@ (Still no Luck!)

So my M14 I bought came with a CASM mount, but I want to try the irons, so I'm trying to remove the mount. I've been struggling with the loctite-ed screws, but I got the two side screws and the two top screws out. Now I just have the rear locking screws and then the main screws in the iron sight mount. However, these locking screws are really tight and stripped my crappy little allen key.

Fast forward to today and I went to home depot and picket up a nice DeWalt locking allen wrench set. I popped it in the locking screw and gave it a twist. It was tight, but then it started turning. Hooray!...............wait

the trick with allen keys (only really works with allen bits and sockets - which are superior to keys anyway) is to tap them with a hammer before turning. this helps loosen the fastener and helps to ensure the bit is fully seated in it.
 
Let me know how that works out. Direct email: info@m14.ca or call tel. 250 721 3444. If you could borrow a 5/16” and 5/32” allen wrench driver with a sturdy handle as pictured, that would be ideal. I ship all CASMs with a vial of blue loctite.

I don't have access to a torch or a heat gun. Basically I could try a lighter, but i don't know how well that will work. I'd also be worried about it messing up the paint.

I'm going to see if I can take back this thing and pick up a socket wrench and a hammer and try that.

I just bought a heat gun at crappy tire for $10.99. If your careful about applying the heat with a propane torch fine, just be careful. If you get carried away you can get things hot enough to messs with the temper of things.
 
Ok, I want a set of those. That and a torque screw driver!

I have done it with a soldering iron. Held the tip against the screw head until it heated the whole area up. It worked! YMMV.
 
Heat locktite till you "just" see a slight wisp of smoke and STOP heating. At this point the locktite will be gummy and removal will be possible. Burn the loctite and it goes back to a crystaline form that can seize the thread or damage aluminum threads. Just warm it up enough till it start to produce a vapour and turn the screws.
Soldering iron is also my weapon of choices for dealing with locktited screws.
 
So after taking a blowtorch to the locking screws they still wouldn't budge! :runaway:

Should I just give up and buy a scope?

Anyone in Calgary/Edmonton think they can get it off?
 
soldering iron is a good bet. if u need MORE POWER without wrecking ####, get a sacrificial allen key, insert in fastener and heat that thing as much as u want with a big torch, then use your good allen wrench on it.
 
Not to start #### but I had to remove a casm gen1 mount today and the mount is toast.
The "jam" screws at the back mashed the threads of the main side screws so bad that removing them has completely destroyed the mounts threads.
I'm gonna go up a size and rethread for him but the mount was being replaced with a smith mount anyways.

Sounds like the OP might be better off drilling out those screws and using an easy out.
 
Nope, I don't think you are starting any shzt here! Thanks for the suggestion on the ifs, ands, or buts for M14 mounts. Sometimes goofy things happen depending on who did the install, I've discovered.

We broke 3 pin punches (where's Sgmacken?) while trying to oust a stubborn op rod guide pin... this was a the Petawawa Clinic. Now I need to order some more pin punches. :cool:
