Just for kicks I'm gonna loads some 220gr cast bullets in my .338 lapua.I can fit 33.5 gr of trailboss as a maximum load. Can anyone tell me what kind of velocity I can expect from that?

i used hornady 225gr interlock sp-rp + 21.5gr trailboss and have 1150-1170 FPS.sound just like .22 magnum.

And 640ft-lb energy at the muzzle, 578 at 100 yards (zero), 517 at 200 with 27.6" of drop. Now all you need is a suppressor... Dammit...

SL

yes. this is very safe subsonic load for my kid.they can shoot that load all day long for fun. dammit our goverment not allow suppressor.

According to a 1960's-era internal ballistics program that I managed to resurrect, you could expect ~1550 fps. It would interesting to see what the actual MV turns out to be. Trail Boss is really handy for light loads, although in my own experience with older rifles leading can sometimes be a problem if I don't use gas-checks with the cast bullets!

"...cast bullets in my .338 Lapua..." You going to use BP too. Cast bullets out of that overpriced cartridge would be like that.
"...a 1960's-era internal ballistics program..." No .338 Lapua then. Not sure if there was Lapua anything then.

Of course there was no .338 Lap then. This program takes input of case/chamber volume, powder characteristics, and othet fundamental data. It is essentially a simple reactor model. I forgot to mention that it calculates a pressure trace - for 33.5 gr T.Boss max press came out at around 20 kpsi.

I await the results. I have the same mold and was thinking of gas checking it to plink away. Just waiting for a supplier to get gas checks in.
I would like to get a lyman sizer to put some highspeed lube on it to send it downrange faster.
Keep us posted on the results!!

338 cal gas check are currently in stock.

I think it would definitely be a cheap effective way to build muscle memory behind that rifle and get necessary trigger time. It would definitely have lots of poops & giggles factor, that's for sure.

A short action rifle built on the .338 BR would be a nice idea if you really want to shoot cast lead in .338 cal.
