Hi guys! I am looking for some loads for a 405 gr hard cast bullet from my 45/70. The bullets are not gas checked and I've already made the mistake of loading too hot and leading the barrel (48 gr of rl7). I have Rl7 and IMR 4198 on hand but any info would be great. I'd like to make up some plinking rounds as well as some stiff ones that won't lead the barrel. Also I slugged the bore and came up with a diameter of .456". The bullets are .459". Too big? Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I'd start with the trapdoor loadings for .45/70 and work right up into the Marlin 1895 loads and see what you like, how your leading is, and how much recoil you can comfortable handle.
.459 sounds like a good size for you, but sometimes lead can be too hard for the given application.

Right now I'm playing around with the Lee 457-405-F and the Lyman 457193, both ~ 410gr with air cooled WW, flat-base as cast, with a slightly modified Darr's pan lubed and 42.5 gr of H322......me and my Remlin 1895 have nothing to complain about.....
Just came from the range yesterday. Contacting Marlin, I was informed they use a 405 grain as test bullets for the 45-70 lever rifle. I experimented and wasnt that impressed with groups. Went on "Loaddata" and found a submitted load the shooter claimed was grouping under 3/4" @ 50 yards.
I have Marlin 1895 GS - I used Starline brass - CCI Benchrest primers - 350gr Hornady FP - and 54.0 grains of IMR 4895 at 1760 f/s.
The first group measured .645 and yesterday measured .329
Thats out of my rifle - I also had it recrowned, so I dont know if that made a difference from the factory crown. Anyway I'm done pissing around developing loads.
