cast bullet in FT/R competition

I have a TRG in 308
and with 185 gr cast bullet its super accurate at 1830 fps
I figured that the 4570 black powder at 1200 fps is ok for 900 meter the 308 should be ok
made some research and in the 1900 they had these long range competition with 30-06 A3 springfield using cast bullet
my scope a smidh bender 1x25 mounted with 40 moa pica tiny rail is according to gbm ballistic web site to do this easily
read the rules for FT/r and yeas no specific rules on bullets just tying to make certain
and would like to know if the Cannaugh range do accept cast bullet…..

will try to reach them on this

ICFRA does not restrict bullet style in F-TR, and I would see no reason for the ORA to not allow you to shoot what ever you have. Most PRA's will try their best to accommodate new shooters.
Good luck, and happy shooting.

It's permitted, but there are reasons why people don't do it.

A big part of success in F/TR is the ability to launch as heavy and aerodynamic a bullet as possible, at as close to 3000 fps as possible. I doubt that anyone could consistently shoot scoring shots with a 223 or a 308 using cast bullets past 700 yds, probably less.

It'd be interesting to see how you'd do with it. You'd likely be at a big disadvantage with respect to ballistics coefficient and maybe have stability issues at distance, but you'll never know until you try. If you do, please post your results.

I shoot black powder rifles with cast bullets, and they can be pretty accurate at distance, but generally see much larger windage corrections and elevation effects of head/tail winds than you will with a modern bullet/rifle. Some of mine have a G1 BC of well over .500 but the slow speeds ( 1150-1350fps depending on the rifle ) give the wind lots of time to affect the bullet. In zero wind they'll hold about 1.25 minutes of vertical at 500m but throw in some rapidly changing wind conditions and it's a serious challenge.

Chris.

There is no restriction on cast bullets at Connaught, but I have never heard of anyone trying it in F-Class. Most guys are running 185s somewhere north of 2700 fps, so aside from the cool factor I would think you'd be at a pretty significant ballistic disadvantage. only one way to find out though!
