Cast bullet lubrification

I use lard or lard cut with canola oil depending on the weather, for anything black powder that has grooves. I'm sure there's lots of fancy things you can use, but in a pinch it's easy to find.

There are lots of recipes out there and a quick search of Google will give you some ideas. I tried one that had beeswax Vaseline and stp oil treatment. I use SPG lube now in my BP cartridge rifle.

For smokeless loads there's wax based lube sticks that are used in lubrisizer presses and dies that size and inject the wax into the grooves at the same time.

Another method is to pan lube where you melt the lube over a low heat and stand the bullets on their base. Use enough that the melted lube comes up and covers the grooves. Then let cool and harden. As it cools you reach a point where you can just lift the bullets out and the lube stays in the grooves. But I understand that you need to get it at just the right time. Another method is the "cookie cutter" method. This uses a slightly opened up casing to run down over the bullets and cut them free from the lube. Getting them to be just the right size might to just slide easily over the bullets might be an issue though. And if you make that work I'd drill through so the bullets just rise up and out the other end as you pick them off.

I if I'm not powder coating I use ben's red recipe for making lube, but the easiest option is Lee alox. I will post more info on ben's red if you want.

It's for smokeless. Minnie bullet in a 585 Hubel express

Yah, so???

After experimenting with DGW BU0901, 3- groove minies, the Lyman 575213-OS, 3-groove minies, and the Lyman 577611 2-groove minies, I don't use anything but the .58 cal. Metford-Pritchett style .575" diameter swaged minies without any grease grooves. I like the swaged minie for it's accuracy, it's easy and fast loading using marginal lubrication with liquid Lee Alox AND I can effectively use it with a lighter load of 45 to 50 gr. 3F black powder. If I want to raise the powder load to 60 or 65 gr. of 3F, the heavier powder load will not blow the skirt off the Pritchett style swaged minie because there are no grease grooves to give the skirt a place to fail.

Well, I'm somewhat of a sacreligious heretic around here because I use sub powders Certain lubes could cause me problems that I would rather avoid. In my case, tumble lubing with liquid alox lube is a safer bet and knowing I can do that with subs and Minnies...that's a good thing for me.

I've read on other BP forums that Alox works well with a Minie' bullet or ball-et. SXPG lube works extremely well in the grooves of the Minie' ball.
