Cast bullets and polygonal barrels.

I recently acquired an H&K P30L which has a polygonal barrel. I'd like to use cast bullets but am unsure if it is wise to do so. What problems could I expect and how might I avoid them?

Previous HK P9S 5-6k, present HK M23 2-3k and about 500 through my P7M13.
About to load up for my Deagle 50 ae, yep in cast with a gas check. As you see, lead is for friend:p
 
If you shoot standard velocity loads, and clean your pistol properly after shooting (we all do that, right??) - you will not have an issue. If you push +P+ velocities and clean your pistol once a year if it needs it or not, there's a pretty good chance you'll have an unpleasant issue, eventually.
 
My Tanfoglio with the .40cal top end has shot nothing but cast. I clean the gun after every shoot but I have to say I have yet to experience any leading of any kind. That is with a Tanfoglio with polygonial rifling. Your mileage maybe different.

I just wanted to say that i shoot cast in my Tanfoglio Limited Custom in 40 cal. I did have some problems with leading when i was pushing my bullets at 1100 fps but once i got a chrony and went to the proper power factor... not a problem at all... i have shot thousands of cast through my polygonal barrel.. everything is good...
 
Can't speak for the H&K but I shoot them out of polygonal rifling once in a while. And it's a Desert Chicken, so I have it twice as bad with the gas system to worry about. I don't shoot this gun very often but haven't had any trouble with the few cast I have shot out of it. I check the barrel for lead fouling and then blow out the gas system (a la AR) with a few copper plated rounds. Take home and clean with brake cleaner.


If you are going to be shooting lots of lead out of this gun frequently, I'd keep an eye on things just to make sure you get no leading and if cast shoots with the same accuracy as jacketed or plated. You might just be lucky enough to use them often.

If you are casting your own, you can fine tune with sizing dies, loads and different lubes since they all have an affect on degrees of leading (or better put... lack thereof) out of any barrel.
