I bought a Lyman mold #287641AV along with a few boxes of bullets & a Lee sizer/lubricator. My bullets (mold) are different from those pictured in the Lyman 49th manual & their mold catalogue. The bullets shown in the manual don't have the AV after the number. Does anyone know what the AV means? My mold has 2 narrow grooves about 1/4" from the tip, and one wide one near the base. The bullets are tapered toward the tip. If the base of the bullet gets below the neck, the bullet drops into the case. If I seat to the recommended depth, the gas check is below the neck, but the wide band just above the gas check is still in the neck and seems tight enough. Has anyone had any experience with these bullets or know why they are different from those in the load manual?

I'm probably not much help to you on the AV suffix, all this is covered on Cast Boolits website, however, when looking for a mold for your gun you have to take into account the length of leade, land to land dimensions, etc. this will tell you how far out of the case your bullet can be seated. This must be reconciled with the length of your case neck, in this case the 7/08 has a short neck. Your cast bullet must fit within these measurements or you will have to seat bullet deeper then you want to. For example, Lyman's 311284 is too long in most regards for the .308 but fits well in 30/06s and .303s. One positive however, testing of mine shows that seating the bullet(GC or not) below the neck is not the problem one might think.

I myself posted a question mutch like your's about a month or so ago after buying the same mold from a member on the EE . Without much in the way of helpfull advice on the subject so I did a little digging of my own ( contacted Lyman directly) , as it turns up the a/v that you mention is a Lyman ( in house ) designation and the bullet mold that you have is the pre-desesor of the current bore riding model that they offer today . Same bullet just no nose end lube groove ! They load the same as the 160 gr sil. bullet data in the Lyman cast bullet handbook .

My mold only has one of the wide bands at the base, not 2 as shown in the manual. Recommended OAL is 2.705. I'm using 2.715 and less than 1/2 the wide band at the base is bearing on the case neck.
