Cast bullets in P-14

Howdy! I'm new to the forum. Any tips on shooting cast bullets out of my P-14, 303 cal. The bore is very good and the gun shoots jacketed bullets just fine. I tried shooting 180 gr. GC cast bullet with 11 grs. of Red Dot, cci primer at 100 yards and they were key hole-in like crazy. Only about 2/3 rd's of them hit the 12" bulls eye target and the rest went into the wild blue yonder??? I'm thinking maybe slower powder like 3031 or something? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks.............

I don't have a P-14 but have shot 1000's from half a doz Lee Enfields and a Ross. Probably the most important thing is to have the bullet fit the bore/chamber. I've found that one or two thou over bore size works best. I usually just go with .314. I've had my best success with either of the 4198's. Accuracy usually as good or better than jacketed ( at least out to 100yds). A lot cheaper than J-bullets and just as much fun. Not as hard on the old bores or brass as well.

Thanks! I think I'll try that.

What diameter are your projectiles? Keyholing would suggest tumbling, not being stabilized in flight by the rifling.
Boolit fit is THE most important factor so slug the bore and see exactly what you're dealing with- it'll take you five minutes with a lubed bore, wooden dowel and an old fishing (egg) sinker.
As for powder I'd go with H4198 or 2400 and try for 1600-1700 fps.
Oh, and the boolits are gas checked.. right?

Just shot some 311299 lymans out of my P14 today, Nice 5 shot groups at 100yds about the size of a tennis ball.

Sized at .313 gas checked under 18grains of SR4759.

Keyholing is from either too small a diameter or too slow in velocity, I'm sure the twist on a P14 is fine for anything up to 220 grains My boolits are 205gr.
