Watched it. It was good except for that part. Is it possible that the mass production techniques at the time could not produce a quality bullet using molds? They mention swaging as superior (at the time anyways).

How are lead cores and cast bullets (such as for 22LR) produced today? Molds or swaging? I'm not referring to the "boutiques" that produce several thousand a day (they use molds), I mean those that produce hundreds of millions a year.

Someone must remember that in those times keeping lead at the perfect temperature prior to pour into the molds was more difficult to control because there were no electric controlled thermostat furnaces. Swaging was a more easy controlled way to make a huge quantity of bullets.

Totally agree. Temperatures were most likely all over the place. Too hot and too cool. Can only imagine the hassel.

At the CCI rimfire plant, they produce 4 million rounds A DAY!
All swaged.
I would think swaging is needed to keep up with demand of the hungry machines.
Saw the Shooting USA show that dedicated the whole 1/2 hour
(22 minutes after commercials) to the plant.

Swaging with power equipment makes lots of good bullets fast. There was a war on. Faster made more.

This is somewhat related but what did they have to work with re: high explosives, I heard somewhere that some mines were filled with an early version of "Armstrong's Mixture" - how about artillery shells, black powder for a filler, or something else?. . .
