On a whim I stopped in at a little rad shop, wouldn't sell me his big bucket of lead, but he gave me a coffee can full for free.

Every little bit helps.

Edit..

Just picked up 110 lb bucket of wheel weights for $40.

Edit..

Sorted 75 lbs clip on, 15 lbs pure stick on,15 lbs steel, 5 lbs other.

Well, got two locals that are thinking of helping me out, time will tell. And as far as going to over twenty tire shops, garages and rad shops, I have gone to small ones and big ones and have been turned down by them all. So I might be stuck paying retail after all my efforts. For those that get it for free, or real cheap, CONGRATS !!

I found if you tell places you make jigs /sinkers for fishing they are less apt to give you "the look" about making bullets.

We raised the red flag about 10 years ago that the enviro Nazi's were making our hobby hard to continue. Myself and two other guys made a list of all the tire shops in our city and we all split it up and on weekends and after work we visited every shop in the whole city and took notes as to which ones would give away or sell to us. Took us about 2 months to visit every shop and compile the list. In the mean time of visiting every shop we collected a lot of lead to the point that we didn't have to visit the shops again for about 2 years as each of us had more than we needed.

In that 2 years the tide had changed for the worst and when we went back to the stores that we had previously scored at they no longer would give or sell to us. I still have a life time supply for myself, kids and grandkids but I still keep in contact with a guy in a truck tire store that I get a pail from once in a while for a case of beer.

Honestly, its about building relationships. Each of my suppliers gets a small bag of fishing weights each time I go. They appreciate it and look after me. I pick up regularly whether I need it or not. No one or nothing has the ability to slip in and ruin it for me. Relationships, as I said.

If I have to much or not enough money I will pass it on to a few people I met when I was trying to get SOHMCO off the ground. They pay what I paid. Everybody wins. I keep my suppliers.

Oh and always trying to develops new relationships. I don't purposely go out looking, but if I'm out and end up near a shop I stop in.

Most of the good responses that I get are from Ontario region. Lower Mainland Vancouver area sucks. All the Walmart's recycle their lead so it goes back with their batteries. Every tire store, has a company that picks up and pays big money so they wont sell me anything. I have stopped telling people its for casting bullets , I just say I want to try casting as a hobby, still doesn't help. Dam, I could have bought quite a few boxes of cast bullets already for all the driving I have done. Some people get back to me, tell me they have a bunch that I could buy, but when I ask for a firm price, they disappear, strange. I think I will go back to the foundry in Richmond and pay retail and quit wasting my time. :(

I found a source where I live that gets a regular supply of scrap lead. I bought 84 pounds of soft, pure lead pipe and roof flashing for $.45 a pound. He told me to call ahead if I want more to see if he gets any more in. SCORE.

Fantastic, congrats !!

I have sent out so many emails to companies, but have gotten maybe 1 % back with a sorry, the rest, no reply. Just going to have to drive some more and be turned down face to face.

Does take a while to get started..Delta should be able to get a lead keel outta a old bust up sail boat.. Saw one once was just about 1000lbs.. Has been a good coupla weeks..My son was melting 75lbs of pure lead out back neighbour comes by ask whats he doing.. Goes home gets a 20lb lead drain pipe.. Gives it to him.. free pail from tire shop.. Dropped off a truck load of scrap steel junk traded it for 20lbs of roof flashing.. Manna from heaven.. The game is afoot.. scrounging is the game..

I am at a 99.9 % failure rate when asking. I have gone to large shops small shops, rad shops, big and small tire shops and building recyclers. It's amazing how fast people say NO, and when you ask what they do with it, basically no answer. Still frustrated, but still trying ! For now ! Again, to the guys and girls that luck out, congrats !!

Tire shops around here were a no-go. What confused me was when the local scrapyard told me they don't sell, just buy.

I found a member here from S'toon who sells wheel weight and pure lead ingots. I got 150 lbs. of each for $1.15/lb including my gas to get there and back, coffee and a pack of smokes. I'm more than happy with that deal.

Sweet !! Congrats ! So far the more common response I get from people with lead, is that will sell it to me at above retail price. I am just so blessed !!!
