Google electronic pyrometers. There are several different and relatively cheap models out there. If you can't afford or the amount of melting you do doesn't warrant it, a pot with adjustable heat setting is the way to go.

They can be really good.
 
Electric lead pot - build a PID controler for the temperature and it will keep the pot at a set temperature as well as give you alloy temp on a readout. Drop 6 200 grain bullets into the melt and watch the alloy temp drop 4 or 5 degrees.

in fact an inexpensive PID and a K thermocouple is far less expensive and more accurate than the Lyman bimetal thermometer.
