Im heading down south tomorrow morning to castle provincial park, the plan was to parka t a staging area and hike in several km and set up camp. Looking at the permit regarding camping its kinda vague, some places say you are only allowed to camp in certain areas, others say if your hiking in its ok just can't be along water etc.

The Designated or" Random" Camping areas are for folks who don't want to stay at a campground with their camper/tent and require a permit which is available at each designated area. Most of these areas are where people traditionally set up anyway so not a great deal of effect on that footprint. Area 9 is a lost cause, there is no suitable spot.

Hike in and backcountry camping is no issue and no permit is required. Be aware that you do have to set up camp a minimum distance from a road but it sounds like that won't be a problem for you. As for setbacks from waterbodies for that, I can't say right off my head.

Yep. One of the very first examples of the NDP sh*t show.

I asked a parks person last hunting season about back country camping in the provincial park and she didn't understand what I was talking about and didn't know what the rules we're. The rules kinda read that there is no back country camping in the Castle provincial park but you can In the Castle wildland park. I would just go for it as I am planning to do this summer.

Probably get a better reply on Alberta Outdoorsmen. The previous government was very busy in that neck of the woods.

Just go do it... they aren't going to hike in to hassle you... they are more worried about drunks in the parking lot.

Did find on a website (not Gov't one) that hike-in camping is not allowed within the prov park itself. Either changed or clarified somewhere along the line.

Seems odd they won't allow back-country stays. Alpine Club of Canada will be building 3 huts equipped with latrines in the area.

Hopefully Kenney will reverse some of this crap.
