Hey..........

Trinity, Diablo and I were just looking at the Ont IPSC Provincials Stages and she asked what catagory she should enter.

Jr or Lady..............

I suggested that she enter as a "lady" as there are likely more ladies in the match to compete against.

But then Diablo said that it is not fair because then there is less of a chance that Juniors be recognized.

Any idea why this rule exists?? She is a Junior and a lady afterall.

Thoughts??

I am in a conundrum.

She should be able to compete in both. If she wins Top lady and top Jr then she deserves both awards if they are both recongnised.

Rule 6.3.1 - IPSC matches may include different Categories within each Division to recognize different groups of competitors. A competitor may declare only one Category for a match or tournament.

Which is the rule I was questioning...

Consider this senario.....

She enters as a JR...........but there are not enough Jrs to recognize.

BUT her score was good enough to have won in Ladys...........

Is she SOL?

Can she switch to Ladys?

Mind you as a total NEWB there is little chance that this would come up..

But it is still an issue.

Alwayz gotz to be about da rulez, huh Quig?:(
You could call up a few weeks before the match and find out which category has enough participation for recognition then switch over to it.

Here's another scenario...

Joe Schmo eneters in Prod...and calculates he'll come in a close second. He also calculates that by switching to Standard (everyone had a bad day) he would actually win. Should Joe be able to switch? I say no...it would be up to the RM to make the call.

Well I've never been smart enough to know which rules to ignore...:p

Better idea...ask the Stats folks when you register how many there are in the Category and make your decision then.

Apples and Rodents....

Being in Production or Standard is a CHOICE..

If you are a Jr or a Lady............there is nothing you can do to change it.

Why? You compete in one or the other seems fair to me although it would make sense to force juniors to remain in juniors until they reach a certain age then move into Ladies division. So to senior divisions.

I am questioning the "logic" behind it..........

Well theres your problem.... you should know better :D

I'd put her in lady as if shes can't get seen as junior she will be SOL with out a paddle. Also I would ASSUME that she would have greater competition.

Take that with a gain of sale because I know little about IPSC.

Of course it is arbitrary such is the nature of rules. The logic keeps ladies competing and juniors competing within their peer group. They can always compare scores to see how they would compare with other groups. If all it is about is trophies buy the little girl ten or so and move on.

It is NOT about trophies............

From your post it is indeed all about peer groups. In this case Trinity belongs in TWO.

It would then be LOGICAL that she be entered in TWO catagories

No, if Juniors are age 19 and under and she is under 19 then she is a Junior. For the purposes of your rule if a "Lady Participant " is a female participant over the age of 19 then she is not a "Lady" for the purposes of the competition definition and she is by defintions given not both.

If you want to define a "Lady" as a "cultured" female fine she might well be a cultured female hence a Lady but but that isn't the definition IPSC is using here.

We often fine things unfair when conditions are not to our liking, doesn't make them unfair just not to our liking.

Hey Storm:

Those have been the rules since God (or someone close to that) created IPSC.

You can't change the rules because you have a kid shooting IPSC in Ontario. It is a much larger entity than that. I sympathize with you, believe me. I have kids too.

However, Quigley has given you the correct answer. You can change any of your divisions or categories at sign-up. ASK the people at the sign-up how many juniors and ladies are entered in the competition. Make your best decision then.

If you remember, not too long ago, I showed up at your match with Standard and Production gear prepared to shoot either. I asked you how many people you had in Production to see if it would benefit the match for me to shoot a different division.

I know it is slightly different (I can't/won't change my gender or age), but it is still using the rules to best utilize what is best for you and the match.

Personally, I would enter her in Junior. That is probably best suited for her abilities and age.

Good luck, and keep them kids shootin'.

Not at all.............It is not that it is not to my liking. It is that it is not logical and I ABHORE things that are not logical.

Now.........if you limited LADYS to be over 21 then it would be logical.
