So our club completed the setup of an indoor range this past December. All approved by the CFO etc. Restrictions on ammo are very very tight. Must be leadless including the primers. Ok, well I can understand that. There are a few brands selling 'green' ammo. CCI, Winchester, Hornady etc. The problem is there doesn't seem to be a supply of these in Canada.

These are the brands currently approved and as far as I can tell none of them are rimfire.

a. All ammunition in the Federal American Eagle Indoor Range Training (IRT) line

b. All ammunition in the UNC Leadless line

c. All ammunition in the Winchester Winclean line

So if anyone can point me to a source for 'leadless' indoor range rimfire ammo I can get them approved for use.

Why would frangible rounds not be allowed on a range? That is the entire point of them after all.


I forgot to add that the CFO considers the 'polymer' projectiles to be 'frangable' and won't allow those in the range either. Those are the ones that consist of copper powder in plastic.

As this is the most common method of producing cost effective lead free ammo one would think the CFO is attempting to refuse the club via back door means.

Cci makes the green tip ammo which is lead free.

With all this stupid restrictions, I wouldn't even bother joining the range. I guess that's how they are going to stop people from shooting....

I've made the effort, believe me. I found those you pointed out. Just not a supply of them in Canada. Every US retailer I've found is 'out of stock'. I can use a US retailer that'll ship to NY with a US Credit Card (which I have) but they won't ship if the billing address is different from the US shipping address yet another Catch 22!

The .22LR is a polymer bullet (Made of copper particle/polymer mix) so that's no go. I don't shoot the others.

I honestly think the CFO is making it so arduous for new ranges that everyone will just toss their hands in the air and say ##### it! Really. You wouldn't believe the nonsense I have to go through to use a freakin' air rifle in this place. I know it's not the clubs fault. It's a beautiful facility. I've volunteered to help get it put together. Frustrating as hell I can't use it.

Older ranges have some sort of 'grandfather' protection and are allowed to use standard rimfire ammo. That's my understanding of the situation. Any new(er) ranges will have to deal with the requirement for 'leadless' ammo. Apparently the CFO considers using our range as the 'example' for all new ranges. Well sh*t that makes a lot of sense now doesn't it. Use an example that no one can actually use. Go figure.

There is a legal principle called an "illusory right" which is a right conferred by law but which is never allowed by the bureaucracy. The state cannot make such requirements which are impossible to full fill otherwise the licence for your new range becomes illusory. Might be worth getting a lawyer involved.
