Catfish for bear bait?

Have a look at the fishing regulations about "wasting" fish meat. Not sure if you can just leave sportfish out in the woods. Yes, you are using it as bait, but someone who doesn't think that way might complain to the fish cops.

Why would you want your bear to taste like fish? We don't shoot bears that eat salmon because it doesn't taste good. Popcorn and deep fryer oil from a restaurant is better.

Used deep fryer fat is better tasting than catfish??
I would think the spikes on a catfish are of little concern compared to a Broadhead or Bullet.
Besides Bears have been known to eat Porcupines and other nasty critters with sharp claws and teeth.
Fresh bait is much better than something that smells like death warmed over, but being opportunistic they will eat anything.

Check your provincial regs. See if catfish are recognized as sport fish, or course fish (or whatever that's called there). When we were kids we used to net suckers and put them in the garden for fertilizer. They were coarse fish, didn't come under regulations regarding the wasting of edibles. I know fish are a common bait here in Ontario. Not sure about Quebec.

Thanks. I wouldn't be using fish as my main bait. I use popcorn and marsmallows mostly, just wanted to add a little scent to the bait. I hunted with outfitters who use fish scraps as bait. They say the fish scent brings them in faster than sweet stuff. I will check the regs to be sure.

Smell is Good. :) It's what's gonna draw the bears to the bait site. Beaver is the thing out here.

Use carp or crappie... Then you can bow fish for it! An excuse to "hunt" twice! You could even shoot the bear with the same bow...

in my area of southern n.s. they have used old leftover tim hortons donuts as bear bait, they love the stuff. if I were to use them I would save a few of the cream filled ones to eat while I am waiting for the bears to come out. :)
