How often does this happen to you?

You're out for a walk, out with the dog, out for a drive, or just 'out' and you stumble into a perfect hunting situation - WITH NO GUN ?!?!?!?

Was working out of town today - near the hunt camp - so, went to check the place and on the way in, saw a pile of grouse and you guessed it - no gun - not even a sling shot.....

How many times has this happened to you?

Do tell.........

:runaway:

Only ever happens to me at work. And at that point it's more a question of "What would my boss think" than the lack of a firearm that precludes my hunting.

I told the bossman that my rifle was part of my basic tool kit and would be with me everyday at work, if he had a problem I would greatly go and work for the competition. Three years ago he was won over with a fresh steak and a honey garlic ring, now he always asks if I have my rifle :D

I try not to get caught without it and when i walk out the front door it is always smokes, lighter, boom stick, truck keys, all in that order.

we used to see bambi all the time hunting season or not going to work- pre-dawn especially- kind of makes me wish for a ford galaxy wagon( if there ever was such a thing) with a bush bumper- BUMP

Day before yesterday, while grouse hunting, we approached a log where we like to stop for a rest. We were both hunting with black powder SXS's and we had only seen one bird since switching to the vintage gear.

After releasing the hammers and cracking the actions, we were just going to sit down when a ruffie came blasting out from under the very log we were going to sit on. My partner closed his action and cocked the triggers in time to take a couple of hail Mary shots as the bird made an arc around our position. We sat down on the log laughing about what had happened, had a drink, smoked a cigarette, and then watched in disbelief as a second ruffie lost his nerve and bust from cover not 20 feet away.

If you think we were dumbfounded, you should have seen the look on the dog's face. She had just been through there and missed them both!

SOme of us learn after the first time :D:D:D:D

If I dont have a gun, I atleast have a slingshot, and some marbles.

Time for a new dog

You'd be right, if that was the only evidence we had to go on. But, the same dog finds 20 or 30 birds on an average day. And, she points (or flushes, if they won't hold) AND retrieves the downed birds, so we take the good with the bad.

What we've noticed is that on overcast, humid days her nose is deadly. On dry, windy days like we had on Sunday, she relies more on her eyes and ears than her nose.

My philosophy with my dog is that I don't want a robot that just goes where I direct it. I want the dog to follow it's nose, eyes, or ears and find birds. That approach has cost us many birds that she flushes out of range. Lots of guys would be looking for a new dog over that, too. But, she chases just as many from our flanks, where we would never have found them or made them nervous enough to flush. And, I'm confident that we haven't left a single injured bird in the bush since I got her.

I look at it this way: We lose probably 40 birds a season that she flushes before we get within range. We get shots at probably 60 to 100 more that we wouldn't even have seen. Plus, we get all the birds we knock down instead of leaving 20% of them crippled in the bush.

No question lots of hunters would give this dog away. I'd be choked if I lost her.

no gun but I had my camra:)

happens to me all the time, if I dont have a gun, I have a wrong one, if its not the wrong gun its the wrong ammo, etcetcetc:)

Never happens, but I am often caught with a rifle when I need a shotgun or vice versa.

The big buck always shows itself when I'm hunting pheasants and the pheasants always show up when I'm deer hunting. Maybe I need one of those double barrel combo guns.....

OK - I admit - this has happened to me countless times....I'll learn eventually.

Yesterday I was working near Huntsville, ON without a gun and nice grouse opportunity.

Today I was working in Toronto.....and I brought a gun with me.....just in case.....hee hee
