Ever since one of my younger brothers “borrowed” my budget (read cheap) 22 rim fire rifle, I have been meaning to pick up a replacement. There are many moderately priced 22 rifles out there so finding one to suit my needs would not be a problem.

I decided I should purchase another semi-auto. Why a semi-auto you may ask? Because I find a 22 semi-auto is fun to shoot and cheap to feed. I wanted my new rifle to have a detachable magazine, wood stock, have at least minute of grouse accuracy and cost no more than $200 not including tax and shipping.

I found such a rifle while I peruse the exchange forum here on CGN. I purchased a new in the box CBC Magtech 7022 for a very reasonable price. It turns out the Magtech is the wood stocked version of the Mossberg 702 Plinkster. I have heard of CBC firearms before now because I looked at a CBC manufactured (Remington) nylon 66 rifle years ago. A quick Google search of CBC Arms (Companhia Brasileira De Cartuchos) told me this company is a Brazilian munitions and arms manufacture. I also learned that Remington Arms and ICI were the main shareholders of CBC from 1936 to 1979.

The rifle is equipped with open sights but with my eyesight I shoot better with a scope. I mounted a Simmons 4X32 rim fire scope and headed off to the range. I set up some targets at 25 meters and sighted the scope in. The only ammo I had on hand at the time was a bulk box of Winchester Dynapoint 40gr hollow points. After I had sighted the scope in, I carefully fired off three 10 shot groups.

The trigger pull was a little heavy but it was smooth and broke clean. I was surprised by the accuracy of this rifle/ammo combination. I could cover the groups with a dime. Pretty damn good for a budget semi-auto rifle with an economical scope and firing cheap bulk ammo IMHO. So I move the targets out to 50 meters and again carefully fired off three 10 shot groups. The groups opened up to loonie size with a couple of flyers. Now this is better accuracy than I expected. This rifle will certainly serve me well as my grouse gun and tin can slayer. It’s a keeper.
