CC in Canada..what would you carry?

Also, there is a reason stats are generally per capital. The USA has 10 times the population.

Oh we need to have CCW up here to protect us. Post the NEWS stories I would be interested to see who all the victims were. Every year you say. Wow. You have friends in the RCMP detachment up here. Perfect, so do I. We have three officers living on my street in fact. If you think the US is a safe place to live then why the need to carry. Why does my friend in Texas rotate with is fellow church goers as safety guards, providing armed protection on Sunday's at his church door steps. Either the place is terribly violent - it isn't - or the locals are convinced it is which they are. Despite all of this the US crime rate has been declining consistently for the past 20 odd years. I guess if you tell enough lies you can convince anyone anything.

Please print the names and dates of the murders in Terrace over the past 15 years. Inquiring minds, mostly mine, would be interested. I do know of two. On Monday I might give the local detachment a call to see what they claim.

According to the Terrace Standar in 2013 we had one murder and 10 robberies. over the year. Pretty bad as it ranked Terrace as having the 8th highest crime rate in Canada based upon a rating system based on type of crime committed. Imagine 1 murder and 10 robberies in a year and we get ranked 8th. Had we had two murders we might have made number one. Chicago manages our murder yearly total every 13 hours. They are pikers compared to us as they only rank 24 in murders in the US.

In the same year Victoria, our Provincial capital didn't even have one murder...imagine that.

Ah, yeah... again... the main reason that I'd be interested in CCW, other than exercising a brand new right... is because the things in my neighborhood have teeth and claws... but I'd certainly take it with me when I went to town for supplies....

You seem to be getting very upset about this. This will be my last reply so this thread can get back on topic. First, I don't live in Chicago and you don't live in Victoria so they are irrelevant to the discussion of how violent and dangerous Terrace is. I could just as easily say that Boise, our state capital, goes some years without a single murder and it is more than 2x the size of Victoria (feel free to google those stats, they are true).

Second, I am not going to copy and paste every murder from the last 15 years, my time is somewhat valuable. Here are the last 5 murders in the last 5 years. That enough to establish the trend of a murder every year and to hopefully make you realize your rosy picture of Terrace is not true.

P.S. if you want to discuss irrelevant statistics, the Northwest Territories has a higher murder rate per capita than any state.

Back to topic. I am trying to decide whether to buy and XD9 Sub compact next or a Smith and Wesson 442.

Boot gun or back up?

For guns of that size, I'd take the revolver. In an actual shooting situation, the revolver will be easier and more secure to put into action, esp. since it is hammerless. If it's for pocket carry, I would doubly recommend the 442.
The issue for little guns is always getting a grip properly. IMO, the revolver beats the semi FOR THIS CLASS of firearms.

If you go up to compacts, like G19s and CZP10s and full size, and carry them conventionally like AIWB or Strong side, then I would take a semi anytime, for volume of fire and a better gripping surface.

The lightness of the 442 is hard to beat, mine is 15oz empty.

I already have an LCP for pocket carry and an FNS9 for full size carry. The XD sub compact is actually not that much smaller than a G19. It holds 13+1 of 9mm or 9+1 of 40sw. So it has double the capacity of the revolver.

But I have always wanted a small revolver so I don't know.

They're almost the same price but the XDs have a special right now where you get 4 free magazines, a holster and a magazine holster.

You know the ol' CGN mantra.... GET BOTH!!
Personally, if you're only getting one, I would get the 442. Since you already have the baby Ruger for a pocket gun, the revolver will fill a small niche in your collection. Learning to handle and shoot a small revolver well takes practice so you might as well start somewhere.
A holster for the Springfield kinda defeats the purpose for a gun that size, IMO. If you can holster carry that gun, you can holster carry a full/ mid size assuming you have a properly fitted high performance holster (which you do!)
Basically, what I'm saying is the Springfield is redundant for your needs since you already have the full size and pocket gun category covered. The revolver, in your case, just gives you more options.
But, for a deal that good, I certainly can't fault you for buying the XDSC!
Wish we had your dilemma here in Canada!!
 
WOW guys I've been reading this exchange and blown away by it...

CCW defence is a couple shots at most in the majority of cases its used by just letting the criminal see you are armed.

If you have to fire for personal defence you're not going up against a prolonged fire fight a 5 - 6 shot small revolver in 38 Special/357 mag in most cases is all that is needed.

As I have stated before I would CCW in a heart beat and I am baffled by the negative responses by so many that wouldn't but that is the beauty of CCW you don't need to carry just don't stand in the way of those that would.

Weight by model with ammunition:

-- S&W 442 with 5 rds of 38Spl +P 130gr SXT = 1.09 Lbs (17.45oz)

-- Glock 26 with 10 rds of 9mm 147gr Gold Dot = 1.662 Lbs (26.65oz)

-- Walther PPK with 6 rds of 380 ACP 90 gr HP = 1.408 Lbs (22.65oz)

For a lightweight defensive firearm the S&W 442 is hard to beat.

Camp Cook - if your'e going to interject with logic, reason an common sense, this discussion has nowhere to go.

I'm enjoying all the comments about what people would carry and hearing not much from people that actually do.

I mentioned that according to an IDPA bulletin, the majority of CCW holders in the US prefer revolvers for the reasons you stated and got jumped on. Seems that some regard revolvers as relics of the past and the preference of wanna-be nostalgia Cowboys.

Revolvers of the "K" and "J" frame size are readily concealable, easily controlled and fire effective cartridges. They are the logical replacement for now prohibited small frame automatics which were the standard for personal protection for over a hundred years.

The sad fact is that for most, those "K" and "J" frame revolvers are now in the hands of their "grandfathered" owners for as long as they live or until they sell them to other "grandfathered" owners.
 
Concealability would be at a premium, because even if it were legal it would be shocking to most Canadians and if the weapon printed you are going to get called in and jumped by the police every time.

Therefore the obvious choice would be the smallest, lightest and most concealable full power pistol and in Canada that would be the Boberg Arms XR9L.
