Has anyone removed the IUR flash hider from their upper?

I dropped my rifle off at gunsmith to get a brake installed, he called me bac 15 min later saying it's rock setted on. Only way to remove is remove the barrel and cut it off..

You will need a DPMS AR15 Upper Receiver Block #231-000-157AQ from Brownells or just mount the IUR in soft jaws and unscrew the Flash hider. It's not pinned or locked on so not sure what his issue is...

Also DO NOT let any "gunsmith" try to remove the barrel with out the proper Colt Canada tool.

If it is rocksetted, dip the assembly in water. Rocksett dissolves away in water.

Your gunsmith should know this if he called it out as rocksett.

Well it's a pretty well known gunsmith in lower mainland.

I called him back and asked to try soaking in water. He said won't be responsible for rust but he'll do it. From 9 to 12.

Fingers crossed it'll work!

Well what he said was, tired to undo with just wrench and didn't budge. Then he tried heating it and it smelt like rocksett while heating it.

That was when he called me back and said itll cost more time and money to do. As install was included in MB price. I basically said forget it then as you don't have the CC wrench.

And posted this thread cause I've seen other IUR's with different muzzle breaks.

It it was shot a lot it might be seized on by carbon. Bigger wrench always solves the problem ;)

I had a IUR barrel nut at work that needed a pipe over the wrench to remove it. When people get salt water on thier rifles and let it rust, tends to make my job more difficult :p

.....does your gunsmith not have a barrel vice?

I have a picture in my head of him holding the upper in his lap trying to wrench the barrel off. :(

That gunsmith should know that rocksett is water-soluble, and to dunk the muzzle in a bucket of water. Especially if he called out the Rocksett smell.

I'd be doing my own AR work or taking it to a real gunsmith if I were you. Sounds like a crook willing to make a buck on people's ignorance.
