Ok a very good Friend of mine in the US,asked me this question about which caliber to get for Concealed Carry? I know that with the 40 and 9 you can get a larger magazine capacity. But I figure if you can't stop what ever it is with 7 or 8, 45acp shots, you gots a real problem.

I'd choose 9mm....based on absolutely no real world experience.

Justification, the 9mm has the highest mag capacity of the 3 and a single magazine is more than enough for most possible situations. There is comparatively a lot less recoil meaning follow up shots will be potentially more accurate. This is especially the case if you are looking for a small & easy to conceal firearm which will have a lot more recoil than say a full sized gun.

This question is a can of worms on an internet forum.
Tell your friend that getting some reputable training is much more important than the type of gun he buys.

That being said, my vote goes for 9mm. Cheap, controllable, and more rounds. Can't get much better than a Glock 19 with 15+1.

I agree. Training and shot placement are far more important than what calibre, make, or model he chooses.

given the same training and same size firearm, i'd go for the .40S&W. never shot a 40 though, but based on just specs i'd go that way.

x2. I really would be happy with anyting 327.mag/380 auto on up , and would settle for a 32 or 22 mag if that was all i could have. They all stop when they go where they need too. That being said, i'd rather make a bit bigger hole then 32 given a choice, or at least push is much faster.

A .22 l.r. in the eye is worth a cylinder of .44 mag all around the guy you are trying to stop. My take on an old gun adage... Personally I would take a 10mm Auto. Despite the "high" cost of shooting a niche cartridge at full loading I have become pretty proficient.

Thats funny and sad at the same time..

:D 38 sp +p or .327 mag in a snub revolver :D

Just had a 10mm put aside and I can't wait to get it to the range. I love my Colt Cobra though. If I could carry that's what would be on my hip.

either one of those calibers are adequate as long as one is well trained and practiced with the pistol. Using some good JHP's would be advised for all 3 choices as well.

.40 S&W in fall/winter easily conceals with heavier clothing.
.380ACP in spring/summer east to conceal wearing t-shirt and shorts.

And a .380 with self defence ammo will stop any aggressor (if your shots hit the target).

One hit with a .380 is much more effective than 7 misses with a .45ACP

Something you can hit with, even if it's a 22lr ;) My vote goes for the 9 too.

I wouldn't get into the "OMG OMG OMG I need a .50AE to take down a drug infused raging criminal who wants to kill you and rape your dog" bangwagon :D

Are saying your friend dont have any firearm and he want advice on what caliber to pick ?
If could carry I would carry the one I shoot the Best , because it's not about fire power it's about protection. To protect yourself you need hit the target. What caliber you use dosent matter, what does is hitting the target

Yes,he can shoot, and has for years. This is his first carry gun. He wears a suit most of the time. So a shoulder holster, small of the back or waistband carry is the way he'll be doing it.
