I think it's kind of funny that your friend that lives in the US is asking you, a Canadian resident, what would be the best CC firearm lol sorry, just had to laugh.

I would carry a big, bad-ass scary looking gun, my FNP45 :) I would rather scare the attacker than have to fire the gun. of course, I would have to be creative in concealing this blocky gun in the summer months.

Luckily, in calgary it snows for most of the year, or just cold enough to wear a sweater.

Weight? I don't see how weight plays much into conceal carry, unless it's a Desert Eagle - good luck concealing that. I carry at least 30-50lbs of tools around my waist for 8-10 hours per day and I got used to it. wearing an additional 1-2lbs can not be that unbearable!

get a good ccw holster like this one :

crossbreed holsters, can't wait to get mine

I'll throw my hat in the ring on this one just for real world purposes. A friends brother was killed with accidental shot from a .22 LR shell. I know of another person who lived through a shot from a .357 through a door of a car. As far as I'm concerned it is shot placement that is the key and the chances of having to use deadly force is also low. So I would rather carry something comfortable that I could shoot well than to carry a .44 magnum 'just in case'. In the case of 9mm vs .40 vs .45 the first shot will count for alot and although a .45 may be more uncontrollable in a gunfight, at close range a larger .45 will hopefully disable enough that followups may not be necessary. I guess it depends on where you live also.

Thats funny and sad at the same time..

It is... but realistically very few of us have ever had any real world experience shooting or witnessing a shooting with any of these calibers (or any other pistol caliber I would guess). I doubt if anyone here (help me out LE people or soldiers) has shot anyone with all three. Personally I would go with 9mm because it is cheaper to practice with and seems to have done the job many thousands of times in the past... If there was any real likelihood that I would be getting involved in a gunfight I would change my plans for that day and do something else. If that was not possible I would choose my shotgun lol.

Ok a very good Friend of mine in the US,asked me this question about which caliber to get for Concealed Carry? I know that with the 40 and 9 you can get a larger magazine capacity. But I figure if you can't stop what ever it is with 7 or 8, 45acp shots, you gots a real problem.

If I remember correctly, according to the stats on a FBI web site, the 9mm had the highest % of 1 shot incapacitation's. It seemed the rounds that had a lighter bullet going at higher velocities had the best numbers regardless of caliber.

I came accross the link to the info by accident a few years ago when I was trying to find a link to get a Form 6 application. I bet it is still on their site somewhere.

Frankly you are asking this in the worst possible place...99.9% of CGN members have never carried concealed...

... or been in a gunfight! This was my thought exactly, although there's no harm in the discussion. Surely your friend in the US must be aware of the numerous American forums that deal with this every day (such as the "Tactics and Self-Defence" thread on the 1911 Forum) where there is feedback from people who have had the misfortune to know from personal experience.

I am no more of an expert than any of the rest of us, but there seems to be pretty solid consensus out there that the most important thing is TRAINING. 3-4 well-placed rounds from a 9mm will beat a spray from a .40 or .45.

A note re ELVIS56s comment, "I know of another person who lived through a shot from a .357 through a door of a car." There was a thread on one of the US forums some time ago (maybe the 1911 as I frequent that one) of a female officer in LA (?) who was shot at point-blank range in the chest with a .357 mag. - renowned for its effectiveness - as she got out of her car in her driveway. Not only did it not kill her, she managed to draw her pistol and kill her attacker before collapsing.

That must be why they switched calibres....

Once again... 9mm, .40 and .45 are all going to do pretty much the same thing. If you want to bring yourself to the next level of "stopping power"... Get a .357, 10mm or .44 mag.
