This summer i got out with the .22 shotshells a few times
3 rounds and 3 victims - 2 snakes and 1 little pocket gopher
Didnt shred them but tore up pretty good, instantly dispatched
All 3 were probably just shy of 10 ft

I was impressed and got wondering how far of range i could get
Set up some cardboard so i could see the spread at 5ft spacings
Standard cardboard pizza box 11.5 " at the folds
This was with a 10/22 with a dlask 8" barrel
This next summer i plan to test their penetration on some plywood and grocery produce

It is good to see those results - I had read that US Cavalry in 1800's had issued "foraging loads" to troopers with 45-70 - so "shot loads" - at the time, it was claimed that the shot cloud would "rotate" with the rifling in those barrels - resulting in a "torrid pattern" - you do not seem to be getting that. I have an elderly .22 rifle that I was going to convert to smooth bore for .22 shot cartridges - that rifling is very "rusted out" in some places - "rusted out" as in "gone" - looks like I may not have to do that - probably I should test, as you did, and see what I get - BEFORE putting any effort into alterations!!

Yes give it a try
I too thought of having to remove the rifling but just went ahead and tried
Guessing my short barrel is why No time for the rifling to effect much
A bit of wax or something in with the bb's would probably help hold pattern as well

the five and ten foot pattern look good but much beyond I think it may not be consistent for a very small targets. Nice test!

Yes not much good for distance other than harassment
But the beauty is being a semi it can chew %%%t up in a hurry

Will be trying it on some swallows
Their dives are getting pretty close to my head
One knocked a smoke out of my mouth this summer

if it cycles reliably in a semi, that changes things. good info

Swallows are not doing well and really shouldn't be shot at, illegal to shoot at I believe.

Years ago I did try these shot shells on a couple of mice in the garage (out in the country) and all that it seemed to do was make them squeak and run off.

I find these type of tests super interesting, thanks for posting.
I have a box full I’ve been saving for mice and pigeons inside buildings but the opportunity has not presented yet…
