Got out to the range today to enjoy some chilly temperatures and fresh snow. After pulling a sled filled with targets out to almost 500m I got myself all set up for a cold bore shot at 300m then ... click ...WTF??? For the first time in well over 1000 reloads I had a CCI primer fail me. In this case it was a CCI 450 primer loaded into 6.5 Creedmoor Alpha brass. Obviously these things happen but I’m curious as to how often. The other rounds from the same reload batch fired with no problem. I can hear powder inside the misfired cartridge and the primer now sports 3 solid firing pin impacts.

Anyone else have issues with these?

The world is an imperfect place and sometimes primers don't pop. I've seen many primers not ignite, in all sorts of firearms. Usually factory ammunition.

I must have had a bad batch of CCI450 because I have had plenty of "failure to ignite".
CCI kept on saying it's my fault. In the end they said the primers are 1 year old and they don't know how they were stored so I should give up.
I still have 800 of them :(

Only time I had a 450 not go off was when it got cold and some lube on my striker gummed up.
Cleaned the striker and spring of all lube and the rest of the brick went off without a hitch.

Could be interesting to pull case apart and weigh the failed primer vs a new one. Be careful depriming it- could still have some life. I've never had a rifle primer failure but I have had a couple shotgun primer failures over the years.

CCI's have notoriously hard cups.

If they aren't seated all the way into the primer pocket, or there's an issue with energy from the firing pin, they may not go off.

I agree with Tokay, I think it's something up with the firing pin assy and the cold weather. I would check that out first before going on to the next steps.

1 misfire out of 1000 reloads isnt that big of a deal, and by itself doesn't prove much. I'm a little curious whether the 1000 is the total of your handloading experience or your results of shooting 1 brick of primers?

I've had so many CCI primer misfires that I just quit using them. Hard thing to do when you've got cases of the stupid things but after god knows how many thousands of rounds you eventually have to start believing what you see.

I have a standard little game where I check misfire threads to see whether there is a Savage rifle are CCI primer involved. Usually its one or the other.

For some reason, people resist the simplest possible potential fixes; namely switching primers and changing striker springs.

CCI 450s are rated for AR15's etc

Here's a chart that helps

Interesting to find out the Remington 7-1/2 and CCI 450/BR4 have the same cup thickness. I've gone through a couple of thousand of the Rem 7-1/2 on two rifles without a misfire but I have not used CCI 450/BR4's.

I have only ever had a few misfires. All were contributed to my screw up. Didn't seat it fully, most went off on the second try. Another was that I wet tumbled my cases. Didn't dry them enough. In both cases CCI 250's.

I have used thousands (multiple) CCI primers mostly large rifle but also small rifle and small pistol, have had exactly 1 dud. So I can't complain although I have also used probably equal amounts of federal and no duds. I guess I'm just lucky.

I’ll have a look at the lot # later tonight. I’ve only fired a couple hundred 450s but thousands of BR4s and BR2s. Never had an issue with those.
