I sent email to cci asking about a primer shortage..
This is what i got back

Our CCI primer manufacturing facility is operating 24/7 to keep up with
enough primers for our factory loaded ammo, contract sales and component
sales. We are currently backordered on most all of them. I have no
knowledge that primers are not going to the general public. Linda

I went to get CCI LR primers about 3 weeks a go at WSS Edmonton. The guy at the counter said they recently got a shipment in but get sold out almost immediately. I ended up with 500 Winchester LR primers.

I did experienced outage of CCI primers in the past. To avoid running out of supply, I keep a 1,000 of each CCI type on reserve at all times.

The same approach goes with all reloading supplies.

1000? I have 3000 left of the 8000 I did have and I am starting to worry that I won't be able to get them when I need them.

1000 Doesn't last me more than a couple of months.

Crap. Is this a Western phenomenon so far?

Was going to hit Epps tomorrow and stock up. If they have them, I guess I;ll ahve to double up.

Agreed. 1000 is a minimum buy :D

Primer

Hi all,

I don't think the shortage is a Western only problem since I did a few place around here in Quebec province and all where low in large pistol primer (i.e. less than 5 000 units in stock  – very low for any gun store)

I do not know why the shortage but this is ridiculous (I personally think that the manufacturers are creating a false stock shortage to increase their pricing but then again this is guesswork on my part).

Take care all :).

If CCI says they are making plenty it probably means Canadian wholesalers are trying to skimp on their inventory and simply hoping their next order comes in before they run out. It seems that most Canadian wholesalers are simply acting as factory agents these days and carrying little actual inventory. How many times a month do I hear that simple things will be coming in "soon". Recoil pads, glass bedding kits, bullets, common moulds, gas checks, primers, on and on ad infinitum. All of which should be on hand in a Canadian stocking warehouse. Is it any wonder people want to order across border?

This is unusual. I have been checking WSS in Edmonton for WLR primers and haven't seen them in stock since April. I was going to say that CCI is the only brand of large rifle primers I have found to be frequently in stock in the whole Edmonton area. From Drayton Valley to Tofield, they all had CCI, but nary a Winchester primer in sight.

primer

Personally for my pistols I prefer Wnchester
Rule I use is alwas try to keep 5000-10,000 of each ahead
Don't like to run low
Bought federal large pistol last time just to keep reserves up
If you shoot a lot buy them in flats beter price easier to store.
Got good deal in spring bought 25000 w:shotgun:sp what can I say a switching to 40cal

It's called "shortening the business cycle" or inventory turnover rate,. It's absolutely necessary for any good business to try to reduce storage costs, and interest rates to stay competitive. I'm majoring in business right now, and it's what they teach us that every good manager has to do, as a matter of competence.

In fact, factories are now doing it to, just in time manufacturing, making a product at such a rate, that they never have a "stock" in a warehouse.

Warehouses, security guards, heating, real estate, it's all very expensive, and by eliminating as much of these things as possible, the products you are getting are comparitively cheaper, than they would be if we did things the old way.

If we still did things the way they were done 30 years ago, then you could add between 40% and 300% to the cost of every single thing you buy. Conservative estimate, (from my textbook, not my own guess) If the shipping container wasn't invented in the 50's, worldwide commerce practically wouldn't exist as it does today. We take the good with the bad. It's mostly good.

Remember, your grandad probably bought a box of "whatever they had on the shelf" and tried to make those cartridges last all year.

Stocker

How many Dist warehouses do think that there are in Canada that stock ammo and components? care to take a guess? Getting product out of the USA these days is difficult, esp. for dist looking for orders of several hundred thousand primers. When is the last time you saw any Federal primers available in 215 or 210. It isn't because Dist. don't want to stock them. FS

They still have WLR in stock as of a few days ago, I pickup another 1000. I didn't ask about CCI this time. They still didn't have any Varget.

There are two major distribution warehouses, they dont keep alot of anything on hand and prefer you order it in.

Contract sales was the key phrase in the response form CCI. Think US military and Canadian 5.56 Nato, a bit of that stuf is being used these days.

I am not a big fan of cci primers because they don't run through my dillion press well. I've got some old benchrest primers that I will give up cheap. I only know that I have had it as far as I am going to take it. They piss me off. Most of what I have are benchrest primers that I bought at a gun show years ago. Do any any of you guys want them? The first I'll take it Get's them.

I do not know why the shortage but this is ridiculous

Easy, reloaders that used to only buy a few hundred primers at the time ended up running out of said primers... so the next time they found some they bought a thousand...

And then you get the guys who usually buy by the thousand getting nervous... so they buy 10,000 of each...

Get a few of these guys walking into a store and next thing you know, the store is soldout (again)
