CCI/Speer

I was wondering as I just started reloading my .40 with Speer brass and Winchester Primers. Every fired round shows some discolouration around the edges of the primers. Not pure black carbon from a true blow by, but more akin to a dusting/dirtying of the primer pockets. Would this cause my velocity fluctuations that I have been getting? (+-100 FPS Spreads) from some minimal blow-by? If so, I'm gonna be unhappy as I have 2900 WSP primers left... Oh well. time to start on .38 Spec I guess...... I'll post some pictures of the rings-around the primers once I get some time... I'm thinking that the primer pockets of Speer brass may be sized to CCI Primers?

How old is your brass ? I use winchester primers in once fired brass and have no issues. If the brass is "old" the primer pockets may be enlarged OR you got a batch of primers on the low end of the manufaturing tolerences. I use Speer, Winchester and CCI brass. The primers are a little harder to seat in the CCI brass, the rest is normal.

Brass is once fired. I wonder if I'm putting too much crimp on them.... Could I be seeing pressure spikes due to excessive crimp causing some gas seepage past the primers? (aka if Win is slightly smaller than CCI primers)...

You can't crimp enough to cause gas to escape the primer pockets.

How do the primers feel when you seat them? Do they seat with very little pressure?

Using an RCBS handprimer, doesn't feel as though they are too tough going in. As it's my first time reloading with them, I have nada to compare to. Hmmm. I'll have to check on some other once fired as I have only been using the Speer brass so far in reloading. Compare primer pockets....

Can you try seating a different brand of primers in these cases? Or can you give a few to another reloader to try and see if they notice any difference in the fit from their normal experience?

It could be small primers, but could also be (less likely if they were commercial loads) loose pockets in the brass...

OK. I measured a sampling of the pockets of my Speer brass prior to reloading, my misc field brass, and my after loading/fired "questionable" Speer Brass. All pockets are 0.1750" and the WSP primers are 0.1751" prior to installation and <Gasp> 0.1750" after decapping.

Guess it isn't primer pockets.... Hmmmmm.... Guess I'll keep looking.... I'll see if any of the guys I shoot with can "donate" several dozen primers of other manufacturers....
