Hey guys, had a bit of a revelation~my interest in hunting coincided with new-found interest in .17 HMR last winter, so I pretty much pushed my .22 lrs to the back-burner and concentrated on this hot little round. Flash ahead to now~I've been spending a great deal of time WITH my .22s close to home where the noise of a 17 wouldn't be ideal. To keep things interesting, I sourced some .22 ammo that I'd never tried~CCI's Sub-Sonic LR HP.

While doing some casual plinking this past weekend, I found a frozen/bruised granny smith apple beside the green bin, and figured I'd blast it. I loaded a few CB longs into my little Norinco Backpacker ( :) ) and sent them down range. I wasn't sure I'd hit the apple, so I had a closer look. 2 direct, one grazed. Funny thing was, you could barely see the entrance holes the CB longs had made. Loaded 3 more, repeat...all 3 hit this time, apple looked largely unscathed. I then remembered the hollow-points, and thought, what the heck? Loaded 5 in the mag, took aim. Bang, direct hit...and this big frozen apple exploded. Now, I'm not sure what role the CBs played in the cloud of mist that replaced that apple...but what a dramatic effect!

Having spent 99% of my .22 shooting using subsonic target ammo., I guess I'm curious about this round and what people are using it for. I'm not sure if there is enough resistance in a frozen apple to cause the kind of expansion that gave that result, or if it was the 11 grains 340 fps boost. Either way, I'm very impressed....and giving thought to using my .22 for small game.

Those CCI Subsonic's are great for small game; shot a few Rabbits with them last season @ 20-30 yards or so they make quite a "Whack" when you shoot a them in the head..:).

Pretty quiet, accurate and they functioned reliably in everything I own; including a 10/22, 597 and a TC R55.

I am curious to how much noise/muzzle blast you get with the short barreled Norinco backpacker.

Just ordered a Dlask 12.5" barrel today for my new Ruger 10/22 and I plan to try sub sonic rounds to keep the noise out of "ear plugs required" range.

From what you say I plan to give those CCI's a try as soon as I get the barrel arrives and I get it mounted

It's quite a bit louder with the short barrel, I always use plugs when shooting the subsonics out of it (unless I'm just taking a pot-shot). About as loud as HV but without the crack. With a long barrel .22 not so much.

I shot one into a water jug the other day and it expanded really well perfect .36 cal mushroom. So it can't be losing that much speed.

CB Longs are quiet out of both, don't really notice a big difference there. (haven't shot it, and a regular-barrel length together, so this is my opinion) Sub-sonic seem similar, maybe slightly louder....high velocity seems WAY louder out of the Norinco.

I think you'd need to fire both barrel lengths side by side to test this though. I'm fairly protective when it comes to my hearing, and I haven't felt the temptation to wear hearing protection shooting Sub-sonics out of the backpacker. Probably should wear it all the time though..
