Non-residents cannot have a handgun in NY State even for attending a sporting event, unless it is sanctioned by the NRA or the IHMSA - Article 265.20(a)(13) New York State Law.

Pretty obscure law... I've been shooting in NY many times... Surrounded by cops. State police included.
No ones ever mentioned this...
Next trip will be June 7th. If I don't post anything after that you can assume I got arrested

HAHAHA ya that law doesn't make sense, im not saying the OP is wrong but Id assume with NY being such a huge draw that shooting events would attract alot of international competitors, ya know? So there has to be ways around it.

I became aware of it some years ago when USPSA (or NY IPSC shooters anyway) tried to get the law amended to include USPSA-sanctioned events, I remember the NRA summary. It only applies to handguns.
