Cdn Tire Throwers ......any good?

I'm looking for a clay pidgeon thrower for occasional informal use and the Cdn Tire web site has one for around $45 - a lot cheaper than the Trius models at W/S sports. Has anyone tried the CT model? Any good?
 
If it's the champion thrower it's ok. Watch for sales, I got mine for $30. It's simple, and that hard sping can get tiring on the back after a few hundred rounds but it gets the job done. You can vary the flightpath by changing where you put the target on the arm.

If a thrower can launch targets at regulation speed that bit of info will be displayed rather prominently on the packaging. If it can't it's hardly worth owning. A plastic hand thrower will put the super cheap throwers to shame.
 
"Trius One-Step" is the ONLY way to go. Once you try one, you will wonder why you ever considered the others. A little more expensive but worth it.

There is NO tension on the spring when you recock it. I can do it with the slightest tap with my baby finger (it has ball-bearings). Put a bird on the arm and step on the foot pedal. The spring tension is created while stepping down on the foot pedal. Whey your foot gets to the ground, it automatically releases. Throws farther than our trap house at the club.

I got mine from LeBarons online. Arrived in a couple of days.
 
This may be a stupid question, but if the thrower (ie the Trius one step) is always right at your feet, then isn't the clay always flying directly away from you (as opposed to setting up in different positions) ........does that get boring to shoot ?
 
CT mechanical throwers are ok but the unit it very fickle. If it's not stuck in the ground properly the whole unit pop up due to the movement of the throwing arm. IMO a hand thrower is quicker and easier to use.

boring? Sure does! That is why it is best to have someone operate it from a safe remote location, or invest in an electronic remote thrower or better still join a club which has the equipment. One of the clubs I belong to, still throws targets for $3.00/25. The aheia range throws all target for $5.00/25 including sporting 5 stand.
 
The secret with the CT thrower is to bolt it down to an old wheel from a car....when planted in the ground, they tend to jump from the recoil after a while, but bolted down, I neverhave a problem(other than the weight of pull to set the launcher)
 
I am not saying those portable throwers are totally useless. With a helper, they can be moved to a safe location and many difficult target presentations can be duplicated so targets that are not available to a typical trap or skeet range can me mastered. Sometimes one can be safely added to a regulation skeet range to suppliment targets therte that may be becoming all too familair.
