Centerfire big game caliber most suited to a 16" barrel?

Keeping in mind muzzle blast, recoil, efficiency and that it will be a 200 yard gun at most (EDIT: let's settle on 100-125 yards), what big game caliber would you choose for a 16" barrel? E.G. would a .44 magnum be ideal? .45-70? .308? .243?

Agreed on the .44 Magnum.

Have a little 16" bbl lever (Win. model 92 clone) in .44 Magnum called the Rossi Puma.

Nice little gun to carry and shoot.

Weighs just 5 lbs and is very accurate.

I hear that Rossi makes this carbine in the pistol caliber .454 Casull.

I think the Rossi Puma in .454 Casull would be an ideal combo if you can keep the gun and your shoulder in one piece.

Marlin made a 45-70 Trapper rifle for a very short time, 16" barrel, 4 round magazine, there's not many around, though.

Ruger made the model 96 lever in .44Mag.

Nice and light to carry. I owned both the .22LR version and the .44 Mag version.

I carried the .22LR version on the trap line.

They both shot very well and like all Rugers were tougher than nails.

Unfortunately the 96 is part of firearms history. For now at least.

Like a fool I sold them both back in the 90s to help finance a boat and motor.

44mag or 45Colt are hardly 200yds cartridges. In 16" barrel one of the best choices would be 358Win, 35Rem, 356Win, 444Marlin, 45-70Gov, 375Win, 450Marlin, 9,3x57 and such.

The .44 Mag could be 200 yd ammo
with the new Hornady 225 grain LeveRevolution ammo for deer and black bear.
