Hi Guys,

I bought a colt upper parts kit from IRG and I have all FDE lower parts. I want to cerakote it. Just wondering if anyone in the lower mainland would want to do a get together where we all coat our guns and we can split the cost of the cerakote. Any interest?

Not only am I..ahem frugal. but This would be a great day to meet a few cgners and get mah guns all purdy!
and with possibly more intelligent opinions or skilled hands than just my own lol
 
I applied duracoat to my lower and a bunch of other parts. Pretty sure the kit comes with aerosol type sprayers so it will be much like spray painting. Shouldn't be too difficult.
 
yeah. we should have at least 4 people that want to coat something. this makes the cost worthwhile and eliminates waste. When I bought the smallest amount of duracoat much of it went unused after coating, a lower, 870 receiver, rail, buffer tubes, a2 stock and some other bits.

I duracoated my lower in FDE. I didn't blast it first. Can't speak to durability because it has been sitting around waiting to be built. In terms of the process, its just like painting any other surface. Light strokes, even and and a proper distance.
 
I'm over in the gulf islands and I've been thinking of doing my spikes lower and bcm upper in fde to go along with my ris II rail. Maybe we can work something out. Don't have a Hvlp system but I have my iwata and badger airbrushes I use for model armor. Anyone know how it sprays out of conventional sprayers
 
Ok guys, I am switching this up and really trying to find out who is legit in wanting to do this. I've been doing some research and I think we should go with cerakote. Also, we can order from their site the starter kit. That is enough to finish 24 hand guns. Should be more than enough to do 14 or so uppers/rails/stocks in some combo. The price of having someone cerakote your stuff is not cheap. I got a quote for a rail at about $160. Lets get 5 guys in on this at $40 a pop roughly. This will give you the chance to finish at least one or two whole rifles or any combo of parts equal to that. All we would be missing is a compressor, location & preferably a sand blaster. I suggest the following colors:

  1. burnt bronze
  2. fde
  3. olive drab
  4. another color of choice

who is in and who can provide what we need:

  • compressor
  • location
  • sand blaster
 
Ok, count me in. I've got 2 uppers and lowers in FDE coming from IRG plus one of there Colt 14.5 in upper kits in black. This is exactly what I'm looking for as I've never done this before. I can offer up to use my airbrush kit with compressor if it will work with Cerakoat.

My garage is a bit small for something like this but I do have a full roll of poly to make a "spray room" if someone has the space.

My vote is for FDE.

FDE is on top of the list. We can order a starter kit from cerakote that comes with a sprayer. We will need the compressor though. The last piece is a location.

Perfect. Don't worry we can choose whatever colors we want. FDE is the biggest draw right now. That is 3 willing parties. We can surely go ahead with this and just wait for one more.

As for sandblasting the parts, which is a requirement for cerakote, we can use these guys in Langley if no one has the equipment for us. www.ublast.ca.
 
Just want to give my opinion. Since I already done a "Cerakote party" with a friend of mine. IMHO it's worthed if you want to do more then one firearm since we got quote 250-300$ for a set of upper/lower. You are missing a few things that will add up to the cost.

Here is my experience, Cerakote is time consuming for prepping the parts, waiting for cure time and cleaning when you done. But it's fun and give you the satisfaction that you do it yourself, the finish is extremely durable.

Here is the extra cost that you have to take in to account:
If you buy the starter kit from Cerakote website the shipping is around 30$USD and they only ship by UPS Ground so add another 30-35$CND for duty fee.

*I'll continue this post later today with more details, have to go to work to pay for my CGN addiction.... :)
 
What about drying time??? Where ever this is going to happen the parts are going to have to sit for at least a good day before travel. I'm amusing that your talking about the air dry version of Cerakoat??
 
I just had my 1022 done with clear high gloss ceracote. First you have to remove the anodizing with media blasting. 2nd , you have to hand sand and buff the parts,( I did this myself cause it's the most time consuming ) 3rd, you have to apply ceracote, 4th, you let cure ( I let mine cure for 4 days). Cost :$100 for a small bottle of ceracote and $60 labor. Make sure to clean all stripped parts with rubbing alcohol.image.jpgimage.jpg

yes you amused right. :p I was thinking air dry. We should be fine to all take our stuff home at the end of the day. Adding an oven just makes it more complex. Although it would cut down cure time before handling.

Thanks for the tips.

On a side note, I have an AERO upper cerakoted in FDE. I just pulled it out last night to look at it and it had scratches through to the metal already. Didn't look too durable. I did buy it second hand but NIB......dunno everyone raves about its durability.
