CF SMG nostalgia

I got to fire the SMG C1 during basic training in the early 60's. That was quite the experience. It was the only full auto that I fired. They had a few Sten's left but were being decommissioned and we were't allowed to shoot them. The old armorers had some scary stories about them, though. Still, I would love to own one.

I've even thought about building a non operational one for a wall hanger.............

they were much more accurate than you would think but they had a bigger learning curve that required more training and fireing time than the rifle. i shot pistol and smg on my units shooting team and could hold the 4 ring at 50 yards in semi - rapid fire on the fig 11.
the smg had its role and was a good weapon but would take a 10" AR over it.

Awseome weapon, carried one for years as a recce patrolman. In Panama a guy from the 82nd asked me to say I lost it in the Jungle and he would give me 2k for it.
I had to laugh thinking of the beating I would have taken from the boys doing areas sweeps looking for it.

Once you got used to the lag from an open bolt, I found the SMG an easy wpn on which to classify.

On the FN, I found that removing the carbon build up on the gas plug and the head of the piston was
a bugger. One guy brought a hand drill with a grinding wheel on a blank firing FTX. The whole platoon
lined up to whirrrr away the debris on their piston heads.

Good times.

Well I guess that explains why we didn't have to qualify on the SMG, they were planning on retiring them. At least I got the chance to play with it for a while. I'm sad knowing I'll probably never get to fire a full auto ever again, at least in this country.

Here is some cool hardware from the SMG's time that I've inherited from my Dad:

What's cool about silver tea tray sugar and cream bowls you ask?
It's what's inscribed on them:

First one is:
Canadian Forces SA Competition
Combined Fire Team SMG

Second one is:
Canadian Forces SA Competition
Obsticle Course Team SMG

Not sure when he did this (I'm guessing 60's -he was RCEME '56 to '82).
He was pretty good with most any small arms but he had a particular soft spot for the SMG.

hey Klunk that C1 brings back memories of the one i sold to another forum member he got my C2A1 as well ....divorce really sucks

Yes indeed, I have many fond memories of the 9mm C1 SMG. I was mainly issued one as my personal weapon, early in my career. Then came the C7 in 1987, when I had one issued to me for the very first. Where does the time go, hmmmm?

The problem isn't the HiPower, it's the majority of the people. Try them with any other handgun for similar results.

Oh I'm well aware, pissed off one Jack when he complained his hi power was defective and I shot an apple at 10m a few times. Granted there are a few that are just straight up f*cked, but overall I find the biggest issues are the magazines. Usually the people that screw up shooting them are the same ones that redo there PWT3 a few times on qual day. ;)

They were fun both live and with blanks. I spent the summer before I started university working in the ARTS Maintenance section in Petawawa, and one day I got to take a day off from changing dust boots on MLVW's to be the enemy force for a platoon of officer cadets. Just me all cammed up, an SMG, and all the blanks I could carry. I would hide myself ahead of their patrol, open fire on them when they got close, and then sit there while one of the cadets led a counterattack on me. Fun times.

Sorry to make you guys feel old but this belongs in the Milsurp :)

Funny how we have had a few C1 SMG threads, and if originally put in the Milsurp, it gets sent to Black rifle, and if put in the Black rifle, it gets sent to Milsurp.
Same goes for the FNC1.

Didn't think it that big an issue.
