I was wondering if someone could sketch me a rough map of the areas you can hunt (usually) at CFB Wainright.

I have access to some aerial photos but I have never been there and have no idea how the base is laid out or where you are allowed to hunt.

Also, has anyone done any bird hunting on the base? From what I understand........

Okay, never mind. I just noticed that the season for grouse on the base ends on September 1st. Wow, short season.

Any help would be appreciated.

What you do is go the Military Police Shack just inside the gate. Speak with the guy on duty there and tell him what you want to do and he should be able to provide you with a map of where to go. If he can't help for some odd reason go to the range control office and they can help for sure.
The game is plentiful on the range there but they are smart as they are constantly getting harrassed by army guys stomping around.

I will be in the area this fall, well before my hunt at the end of November, so I will see if I can get some info from the MP. I would just like to get an idea of the lay of the land before opening day.

After you get your morning safety brief from the Range Con WO, the enviro people will show you where & where not to go. They'll issue you a map too.
It's well controlled and quite a large area to hunt.
I'm awaiting to hear if I got the primitive landowners hunt.

It should be corrected as "Landowners hunt" which is a draw open only to CF members on CFB Wainwright and the "primitive hunt' is the 1st hunt with four centerfire hunts proceeding, I think though that if all draws are'nt filled by CF members then they open it to civillian pers, I could be wrong though.
 
Those successfully drawn on the "Landowner" hunts will be notified on 17 Oct 08. I too am hoping for the 1st hunt (aka primitive). It's like shooting cows in your garden.
 
I was aware that a certian number of permits were made avalable to CF personel but did not know they called them "Landowner permits". I think its great to make use of the "no show" opportunities in this fasion.

I was drawn for the primative weapons season again this year. Am looking forward to the hunt. The first season has been very successful and I have done well in the camp over the years. However I don't believe "shooting cows in your garden" is a good descrition of the hunt.

Agreed, the whole "Cow's in the Garden: maybe a bit much....

but I have been posted to Wainwright for 5 years now Everytime I venture into that training area I bring my GPS and plot where I see the deer on my map. It's no different than you probably knowing that whole Rocky Mtn / Nordegg area like the back of your hand. As a result you are very successful when others are not, right?
