Culture of politeness does not mean a culture of entitlement. I'm polite and hold the door open for little old ladies. Does that mean I can have a slack job too? :D

Anyhow, who cares? The Firearms Act they so cheerfully administer violates fundamental rights.

But they do it with a smile. Gives me the warm fuzzies. I said "give them a job." Considering their "general" politeness, they are entitled.

I had to vote yes as most of the people I have spoken with have been polite.

However I have had problems with the registration of one of my target pistols.

This situation goes back to the time we had to re register items that had the previously issued RCMP green certificates.

The new certificate came through as the gun having a 340 mm bbl, single shot & no mfg name of the gun. All this info is wrong. In fact the only item that is correct is the serial number. Naturally I contacted the CFC, yes they were polite but dumb as bricks.

The first person I spoke to informed me that they were trying to get as many registrations done as possible & that corrections were not a priority at this time. Perhaps I could call back in a few months & they could update the info then. I insisted she take the correct info. "now" & try to get me a correct cert.

Since that time I have spoken to four other people, one of which was a supervisor. I have also sent a copy of the incorrect cert. with a letter explaining what changes need to be made.

I am still waiting for my revised certificate. This situation has been going on for about four years. I am tired of making phone calls & mailing phocopies that I am sure end up in file 13

So these people are now worried about their jobs. I find it very difficult to find any sympathy for their situation.

I've had polite courteous service.

Once I faxed my ATC application on Monday, called them on Wednesday because I was leaving for a job and they FAXED me my ATC IMMEDIATELY.

Got no complaints with the people working there, just the system itself.

Over 20 dealings with them over the past year and most were very nice folks. The few who weren't "nice" were just about business and were certainly not rude. I'm usually good at talking people up and I've had some good conversations. Unlike (apparently) most of you, I do feel for them losing their jobs. If you lived in a depressed area and the Gov't opened some office and offered you a job you'd take it. As a matter of fact, one guy that I talked to was an actual gun guy - I'm sure he's the only one  - anybody ever get this guy? And, yes, some were helpful and, yes, some didn't have a clue but got the job done. Hey, it's not their fault they work for a much despised (by us) gov't department. WTF, a gig's a gig. ;)

Wasn't it Dustin Hoffman that played the Rain Man? :p
Retarded? I've had many CGNer's treat me that way when I buy a gun...
Try to be objective, folks.

Despite the fact, that they entered my info into their computer wrong, which could have delayed the things, and did not believe a word of mine, until someone else proved that to them, they were pretty polite. If it's in their computer system - Canadian bureaucrats believe it's ultimate truth.

I'd have to say 90% of the time they are nice and polite. But sometimes they are very picky and treat you like you don't know what you're talking about!

Just for fun...

So about 13% find poor service or rudeness.

The CFC estimates (lowballs) the number of gun owners at 2.2 million (to justify the "success" of registration - another story). CILA says 7 million.

But assuming 2.2 million, and if 13 % get bad service, then about 285,000 people have experienced poor or rude service. So that is about 1/2 of everyone in NB - 729498 (according to 2001 Census data)

It is certainly everyone in Miramichi (2001 population 18,508) and everyone they know, or probably ever met.

As the Firearms Act was designed to "encourage" gun owners to give up, pack it in, and sell guns, then we can assume some have. Maybe they got the rude 13% and gave up. They wouldn't over time be added to current gun owner numbers. Maybe they didn't vote on your poll. Then again, new gun owners exist. So this is a fresh supply to give the "13% service." This has happened for a decade as well as those who endured the 13.

Maybe there are 7 million gun owners. If they got the magic 13, then 900,000 people got poor or rude service. So that would mean, for example, everyone living in Nova Scotia got the treatment. Everyone.

Or everyone in New Brunswick and PEI combined. Wow.

In our provinces. In Canada. We are not making this up.

Anyhow, I agree they are entitled. Give them good secure jobs. Or at least 87% of them. :p
