Hi. I bought a pistol from Williams Arms in Port Perry on Tuesday, March 20.

I received the pistol in the mail by March 23, or so.

But, two weeks later I am still waiting for the new registration certificate from the CFC.

Is this normal?

How long should I expect to wait?

Would phoning the CFC help?

I want to get to the range and shoot this sucker.

Heh I was going to make a thread about this....

I paid for a handgun on the 27th of March and the transfer was approved on the 30th and my temp ATT and transfer notification were faxed to them.

Yesterday I got some mail from the CFC the 5th of April I got my temp ATT that was mailed to me (valid only for the 30th of March) and my transfer notification...

Go figure.

Why do you even care? You have the gun already, that is all that matters. It is registered, you can go to the range with it just the same.

If and when the feds send out more paper, I say whatever. Can't see it changing the quality of life for anyone.

Used to be 10 days or so.

Now it is much longer. More people buying and selling guns these days?

I have also experienced the "extremely busy" notice in the CFC call centre, with the waiting time of more than 20 minutes average.

OK, on the basis of the last two replies, it sounds like its taking them a little longer these days. Will give them 'til next Friday to get it to me, then I will have to phone.

Question: is it still legal to take it to the range and shoot the sucker, as was suggested?

I did receive in the mail from the Ontario CFO's office a copy of the temporary ATT to get the pistol to my house. And on the temporary ATT it lists the registration certificate number of the firearm to be transported. I don't know whether this is the OLD reg. number, however, or the NEW registration number in my name. Geez, this is way too complicated.

I believe it is legal as long as you bring the original sales receipt with you in lieu of the reg.cert; at least that is what I've been doing :)

Good luck!

X2

The vendor would not of shipped the gun to you if the transfer was not approved. At that point the gun is legally registered in your name.

In Manitoba the Transfer Notification (Buyer) comes from the CFO usually before the gun arrives.

As far as the actual registration certificate that comes through the RCMP now, it can take up to two weeks.

I will take my guns to the range with just the transfer notification since that is proof enough that I am the registered owner and it is approved.

The CAFC prints certificates ONCE a week, on Thursdays. My latest certificate was printed Thursday, March 29th. I received it yesterday, thursday April 5th, Miramichi to Montreal which is NOT far. So not only do you have to consider a once a week print run, you also have to factor in Canada Post (who aren't the fastest service on the planet).

A few weeks ago, I posted a money order from my local post office (Montreal) to a post office box in Kitchner. Post office to post office... 8 DAYS! Kitchner is only 1 to 1 1/2 hours past Toronto.

So don't be surprised that it takes 2 to 3 weeks to get a certificate, it's the "system".

Well, ok then. I have the receipt from the retailer with the serial number of the pistol on it, I have the pistol, and I have a copy of the temp. ATT from the dealer to me with the authorization number on it.

Looks like I'll be taking the sucker with me to the range asap and wait for the paper work from the feds to follow.

Interesting point about the once a week production run of the reg. certificates. Mine was probably yesterday which means I may get it next week.

Thanks guys.

BAD ADVICE.

My ATT states along with other things.

"The holder must be in possession of the Registration Certificate(s) for the firearm(s) being transported."

Note that it says"MUST be in possession" no maybes about that.

Cheers.

OK, Halger, THAT made me look at my ATT.

My ATT, luckily perhaps for me, does not say anything like that.

It says the usual things about most direct route, must be in possession of a valid license, the ATT may be revoked if I cease to be a member in good standing of my club, etc but nothing at all about having the reg. certificate on me.

Hmm.

Still think I will take it to the range unless someone can definitively prove that this is a BAD idea.

Anybody else? All views are welcome.

Firearm bought on March 21 2007
I just got certificate yesterday in the mail - April 05 2007

Ditto.

However I sent in an app. to Ottawa for six restricted firearms I want to import, I mailed that on the 8th, according to their system they received it on the 26th (WTF?) after spending the whole afternoon on the phone with a verifier which consisted of a conversation of him mainly saying: "Is it this one?" about a hundred times.

Why does it matter if we get the specific make and model, it's a pistol, the barrel is longer than 105mm, ergo it's restricted. That's all that matters.

The real question in my mind is not how long it takes to get the registration certificate, it's how long it takes for the CFO to add it to your ATT.

You're telling me.

I'm waiting now a week on the transfer of a NON RESTRICTED mosin nagant.

also,
I've had two restricteds in transfer since February,
i called

"call on tuesday, speak to katherine and tell her to get moving on it"

I almost went insane into the phone

I bought three restricted handguns on CGN and the registration cards arrived the day before two out of the three packages got here. Took abount 10 days for the approvals, cards and shipments to arrive.

When I bought a handgun recently my Temp att states...... I had 30 days from the sellers address to my home address only...not to a gun club.
When you transport your firearm, you must have a reg certificate.

transfers

you could phone, give your reference # and tell
them to fax you a copy, works sometimes, thou
not all the time. You can ask if the transfer is approved
and if they say yes it is approved- the gun is now
registered to you- i have never been asked to show a
cert. in 40 years, but than again I live in a better part
of the country.
