CG63, tell me about them

So I've been looking into a 6.5x55 rifle for a while and the 3-Gun match today has pushed me one step closer to buying that one nice target rifle.

The reasons I'd like to buy one

- relatively cheap as far as a target rifle goes
- few people have them
- they look awesome
- they have character
- I've been wanting a rifle in 6.5x55 for some time
- irons rule

Are they good shooters? Does anyone here have first hand experience with them? Any major differences between the different types of rear sights (GF, Soderin, Elite edstrom, etc)? Are the sights calibrated for a particular load? Is there anywhere I can find info on the sights? Do you eat green eggs and ham?

For reference, I'm looking at the ones listed at P&S Militaria. Are there any other places to pick them up?

These are the ones Tradex is selling? I definitely like the looks of them; I think they are designed to be as ambidextrous as possible, for they have a bolt handle that sticks straight out and the cheekpiece on both sides.

Do you have "Crown Jewels" by Dana Jones? If not, a worthy purchase. These rifles are covered in depth.

The rear sights are matter of preference. In the right hands, they all do the job. Forget competitive target shooting. These were obsolete in 1965 or so. Modern competition guns use custom actions, stocks, barrels, etc.

Still a great buy though.

Ditto. The practical limitations with all Mausers for conversion to great target rifles are the magazine well in the bottom, the ejection port in the top and the thumb notch on the left sidewall. The Swedes are not selling off their best target rifles because they are generos guys ...

When 7.62 became the service cartridge, the DCRA agreed that any rifle could be used in competition. That touched off a mini-arms race as all sorts of conversions and commercial rifles were tested and set aside. Purpose designed target rifles win the matches.

The sights will be intended for use with standard Swedish service ammunition. One would be a great recreational shooter, although not the best choice for serious competitive shooting. I don't know what type of 3 gun match you are shooting, but in the 3 gun matches that the OSA hosts, with precision shooting to 600m on a figure 11 target, one of these would be a very poor choice with the original iron sights.

These rifles still have some notable differences from regular issued swedish military mausers. One not mentioned so far is the bolt mech. CG-63's sport a modified bolt for target shooting, and other differences. In other words these rifles are and were Purpose built for target shooting. They may be out classed now, but in there day they were the ####...

I'm not really looking for a target rifle to win matches with, just something that can reach out to 400 yards better than my current rifles. I find the 6.5x55 interesting also so I've been wanting a rifle in that cartridge for a while now. The CG63 is also super ###y.

These rifles were made up to be used in Swedish target shooting, competing against other similar rifles. They are used target rifles; some may have been used quite a bit, and external condition is not the only gauge of condition when assessing a target rifle. Until the barrel has been thoroughly cleaned, and the rifle carefully tested, accuracy is going to be an unknown. The amount of life remaining in the barrel is also a question. They are not expensive, as target rifles go, and certainly are excellent recreational rifles. These rifles were also set up in .308. The NRA wrote up a test of one, at the time when they were being sold new. It was reasonably accurate, but nothing special, averaged a bit over 2 minutes if IIRC.
If you ever wanted to mount a scope, all the usual alterations would be necessary.

I have one in 7.62. I am planning on using it in some fullbore competition for sh!ts and giggles. A decent way to get into the sport if you don't want to shell out for an RPA or similar right away imho. Besides, most of what counts is whats behind the trigger....
