CG63 - This one is mine! Range Report - Post 5

I didnt know whether to post this here or under precision rifles, but I didnt want a snooty you should have bought a savage, remington .......

Its wood, its blued metal, its a Mauser, its 6.5 x 55 and its in better condition than the folks at Tradeex had rated it.

Anthony was great to deal with - he pulled out three that I was looking at on his web site and described them over the phone. I picked this one as I have a couple other Husqvarna M38s and I love them. I ordered on the 23rd and had it here by the 28th - great guys to deal with and their customer service is top notch.

My first foray into a target rifle, I wont be going to the Olympics with it, but will be looking forward to using it in our local club matches.

Now need to work up some loads for it, have some Laupa 139 gr bullets that need a purpose, and I hope to get out to the range with it soon and get a range report done.

I had one of Tony's hand-picked CG63 from the first batcha couple years ago that was in excellent condition and was a tack-driver. Even with the sights it was amazing. I was talked out of it eventually, but was a pleasure to own for a time.

I've looked at those guns online many times. I wish I could justify buying one. They are in a class by themselves, Very Cool I bet it will shoot great. Looking at your trader stats, you'll be selling it shortly. Take good care of it, I may buy it off you Jack PS. Is it a single shot ?

Well it was a beautiful afternoon and the snow is melting so I took my new pride and joy to the range to get to try it and see how it shot. Snow is still kinda deep and soft so will wait till its gone for some serious work.

First off - as has been posted may times, Anthony under rates the rifles he sells - when I gave the barrel a cleaning to start from a clean bore, it was beautiful - shiny bright and the rifling looks great. I tried to take it apart - he told me it was bedded and you can see the bedding around the receiver - the only problem is I dont think they used any release agent - I couldnt even get the trigger guard to come out. At some point I want to steam a couple of the dings out and refinish it - but that can wait for a while. I bought this one because its a Husky and since I have a couple other Husqvarna M38s and I love them.

I had loaded up some Winchester brass with RL 22 and 139 grain Norma HPBT bullets to try out. The Soderin sights are nice - a little mushy but they move where they are supposed to go and seem to stay there. A few shots at 25 yards to get it lined up (first three into a ragged hole - but its 25 yards .....). Trigger breaks cleanly - havent put the scale on it yet but my guess is in the five lb range. Recoil is negligible, even off the bench.

Now - I have said this before - I am not a target precision shooter by any stretch. My first three had one I pulled and two that touched at 100 yards - not bad for a receiver sights and eyes that are a month shy of 50 years old. I adjusted the sights (unfortunately the wrong way for windage) and fired another three - a 1.18" group (picture below). As my new spotting scope hasnt made it and I was getting tired of wading up and down the range, I decided to call it a day and wait to do my final dialing in when conditions are more favourable.

As you can tell, i am very pleased with this purchase, and look forward to trying some offhand shooting with it this summer.

The only reason I do not have one of these Swedes, is they do not come in a left handed configuration.
So, I had to spend alot more cash, and finally acquired a Wichita 1375 rifle, in a true LH.
I'm jealous, because you have much more spare change for ammunition!
In Canadian Army sniper rifle trials, ( about 1970'ish )the rifles that were tested, Parker Hale Santa Barbara Mauser, ( to be the the C3) a Swedish CG Mauser in 7.62 NATO, an International Match M70 Winchester, and an FNC1 with a low powered scope and an inadequate sheet metal scope mount.
