CGN Dumbass of the year award goes to...

I found a decent set of roll pin punches, as well as a kit containing 1000 different sized roll pins at Princess auto, and got out the door for under $20. I have since used both several times and saved myself a lot a aggravation (not to mention scared up guns).

You use a roll pin punch. It's like a regular parallel punch, but the front face has a little 'dimple' in it that locates in the centre of the rollpin, which centres the punch while you're driving in the roll pin. It also prevents damage to the face of the rollpin that your driving..;)

Six-Star, What a gentleman!
I call those little protuberances on the end of the punches "Tits" or Nipples".
Shows where my mind is!

Hey! I just noticed that the board automatically censored the word tits!
That's a technical term, I'll have you know!

I was skeptical about using the vise grips at first as well. I've used them a couple of times now and and it makes putting in roll pins much easier and signifigantly reduces the risk of dinging the receiver while trying to tap the pin in with the 5 or so hands normally needed for that task. Wrap the teeth of the grips up with tape to avoid scratching anything. Hold the pin in place in the desired hole and adjust the grips so they are just a smidgen tighter than enough to hold the pin in place. Progessively squeeze the pin into place by tightening up the pliers a half turn or so at a time, releasing them and closing them up again. STOP if it encounters any resistance. The pin just slides right into place.

The only problem I can see with this method, is A) it takes longer than drifting it in with a brass hammer. B) eventually as the pin goes in, there is nothing left to grip with the nose of the plyers, so you end up drifting it in anyhow. C) Roll pins are made of sping steel, compression of the pin enough to have it slide in a hole could damage the uniformity of the pin and make it 'out of round' (this being unlikely, but some of the smaller pins it could happen) If you have excellent results with this method, I would say have at 'er, definately better than a scratched up AR :D
