A-square finished! After collecting many parts on this forum, my new rifle is finally done! It is a Win M70 action with Gaillaird 338 barrel. The stock is a Boyd's laminate pepper design. It will soon be wearing a Leupold VXIII 3.5x10x40 with weaver rings and mount. The barrel has a threaded muzzle break for the range days, and a threaded muzzle protector for the hunting days. The 338-06 really doesn't need a muzzle break anyway, but it's ok to have anyway. The barrel channel was cleaned up a little bit, and the action was pillar bedded.
I will post pics of how it shoots in the near future. I have a lot of confidence in the gunsmith, and know the groups will be great. The work was done by AC Douglas here in Saskatoon, and highly recommend him. He is a highly knowledgable gunsmith.

nice...if the bore were .020" bigger it'd be even nicer:D:)

very nice...did you slim down the stock a bit?...I find the Boyd's stocks a bit heavy almost everywhere..."cccan" has one on his Whelen and he likes it...:)

I've heard that before about the 'heavy' feeling, but this one was pretty slim out of the box. It has a perfect 'balanced' feel with a 22" tube, and fits nicely. The M70 action might not be a first choice for some people, but this was my first project, and the price was right. This is actually the first Win action I've fired, and it seems to do the job nicely. It doesn't have the smoothness/finesse like my Steyr, but I'm sure the moose/deer really won't care.

I still haven't put up pics yet of my range report but right now I'm getting about 1.5" groups at 100 yds with:
51.5 grns RL15 with 225 grn Nosler partition and 210 primer.
52.5 grns RL15 with 210 Barnes TSX -210 primer.
I'm hoping to fine tune them a little tighter this fall and get this round to perform under an inch. I think it's capable of it. I will also be using H4350 for my next reloading session, and hopefully the results will be promising.
I took this gun out this fall for mule draw season with the 210 grn. Barnes TSX. I was a little surprised at the power this cartridge harnesses. At around 115 yds, the 210 Barnes tsx literally 'knocked' the deer over leaving around a 3 inch exit wound after going thru the lungs. When those tsx 'petals' open, the wound channel is enormous! I am definitley impressed with it, but am wondering if it's too big for deer! I did build it as a moose/elk gun, but wanted to try it out this fall on deer.
Range report coming-and yes this thread is useless without pics.:p

I know:redface:, the weavers were laying around, so on they went for now. (looks away in shame)
Not to worry about the R&B. The Weaver system works just fine, esp with good rings like Burris Z rings.

Nice rifle, BTW :)

Not at all. I think you will find that with most shots you will end up with less blood-shot into the surrounding tissues than you would typically see using any of the 7mm or 300 mags or even a .270 for that matter. The large diameter wound channel drops blood pressure almost instantly and the sight of a deer "tipping over" at the shot is pretty typical.

No such thing as "too big". That would be like "too dead". :D

I using my 35Whelen this year loaded at 2550fps with 250gr Speers. I don't think that's too big.

I've used a 375H&H in the past and lugged it for deer. The rifle was too heavy, but the caliber was perfect! Kinda like a 38/55 on roids. :dancingbanana:

the 338-06 at 115 yards is the same as a factory 338wm load at 165 yards. Way overkill.

I don't think it's way overkill. I built it for a moose and yogi gun, and had it shortened to a 22" barrel for ease and the cartridge really doesn't need any more 'barrel'. I was just surprised at the knock down power this cartridge contains. I heard that it had a ton of energy, but seeing it real life sure is nice.:D
