CGN'ers with Night Vision Experience - Need Help

Thanks for all of the replies. This quest lead me to actually learn what I really wanted and can make most use of, so I bought a Pulsar Helion Thermal and super stoked to get it!

Have a good long weekend.

AN/AVS-9 with the MX10160C are some of the best bino's money can buy imo. crystal clear with autogateing. Worth the pennies if you can find a set here in Canada. I'd sooner be homeless than let mine go.

As far as OP's question. I'd look at the used market for a set of US PVS-14 with a solid Gen 3 tube. White Phosphorus is cool but costs more for the cool guy factor. I've dealt with alot of different night vision and by far the US stuff is 10x better than what is available commercially up here through GSCI or ATN, both of which use cheap tubes. I compared a top end GSCI AN/PVS-31s to my older AN/VIS-9s and the AN/VIS made them look like toilet-paper tubes with green cellophane on them.
For some reason the airsoft guys have tons of access to US NVG's so I'd recommend checking out Airsoft Canada, its a hassle to get into the EE but they do have the market when it comes to NVG.

X2. The PVS14 with a good GEN 3 tube and a good mounting system is the way for most civilians to go if they can afford it.

I need to upgrade my mounting system with a better quality J arm.

Look into Wilcox dovetail mounts over the USGI bayonet mounts. Less wobble/movement and far more reliable as it is used.
I've seen number PVS-14 with high quality US grade tubes for 3-5k depending on specs.

Agreed, PVS-14 is the go to for the average night vision user. I'd also recommend checking out AB NVM and Pitbull housings. They are more durable than the PVS-14 as they are made of machined POM instead of injection moulded. Make sure you get a US tube, ITT/Harris or L-3. A high end Russian Katod tube can be close to a mediocre US tube, but for the most part Russian tubes are crap. Photonis in France also makes decent tubes, but only the XD4, XR5, and 4G. Photonis is high end Gen 2, not Gen 3. ATN, GSCI, etc will generally give you very low end tubes, they prey upon those that don't know any better. Any one that knows half a thing about night vision laughs at their provided specs and made up terminology.

Get rid of the USGI Rhino, they're terrible. Go for a Wilcox G24 or Norotos AKA2, for the arm get a Wilcox dovetail or Norotos DDA. I prefer Wilcox G24 and Wilcox dovetail.

MX-10160C is excellent as far as standard tubes go. I used to own one, now I run L-3 film less white phosphor tubes in Mod3Bs. My spare set is a pair of MX-10160A.

Make sure you get a US tube, ITT/Harris or L-3.

Question: Can I export Night Vision?

Answer: Not without valid U.S. State Department approval. To do so without such approval is a Federal Offense and you will end up in a U.S. Federal Penitentiary. This is no joke and pleading “ignorance” will not hold up in court. U.S. Night Vision Devices are highly sensitive items whose distribution is tightly controlled and heavily enforced. It falls under the International Traffic in Arms Regulation (ITAR), which states:

Export of the commodities described herein is strictly prohibited without a valid export license issued by the U.S. Department of State Office of Defense Trade Controls prescribed in the International Traffic in Arms Regulation (ITAR), Title 22 Code of Federal Regulation, Parts 120-130.

Full ITAR language can be found here: http://www.pmddtc.state.gov/regulations_laws/itar_official.html

Exportation of Night Vision Devices includes travel. This means you cannot take a night vision device with you if you leave the country. Just so we are clear, this means it cannot be taken out of the country by plane (checked or carry-on luggage), train, boat, or automobile. Doing so is in direct violation of ITAR and, again, you will go to a Federal Penitentiary. This includes all civilian and law enforcement personnel (in short, flashing a badge will only make you less popular at the Federal Penitentiary).

On the same note, it is a violation of ITAR to allow any non-U.S. citizen to look through U.S. Gen3 night vision equipment (even on US Soil). They are also not allowed to have access to any operator’s manuals or documentation, whatsoever, pertaining to US Gen 3 Night Vision Devices. This is a little-known fact about ITAR and Night Vision Devices, but it is true. We have confirmed this with the US State Department and major Night Vision Manufacturers. At TNVC, we take great care to ensure our clients are properly informed on laws and regulations pertaining to night vision.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is serious business. Night Vision Devices help give our Warfighters and Law Enforcement Professionals the edge in defeating America’s enemies and keeping our communities and borders safe. At TNVC, we do everything possible to insure this technology stays in the U.S. and that our customers do the same. Please help us safeguard this technology by owning and using it responsibly.

Have you looked at ACTINBLACK in Europe yet? They make a good product with average range prices for the quality you’re looking for. But, remember buying night vision isn’t cheap, then you get into accessories for it.

ITAR is not a ban, its a regulation. Its the same one that covers Aimpoint, EOTech, Surefire, Trijicon, Magpul, and tons of other brands that you can easily find in Canada.

There are tons of used or surplused NODs floating around.

Those specifics I wouldn't know, I probably spoke out of line regarding that. I got my stuff off Airsoft Canada.

Correct me if I am wrong then ? Your buying things that are highly export controlled but have appeared on this side of the border ?

At the other end of the spectrum (ha ha) are binoculars and telescopes with very large objective lenses and limited magnification. I find my Mk I Eyeball, Human is suboptimall on night vision mode. The optic nerve attachment point or maybe some dead "pixels" on my retina give me blindspots when I look directly at something. Looking off is uncomfortable and I haven't trained my vision to stay off target. But, at night a pair of ordinary binoculars counteracts that physical imperfection, and I seem to see much better.

To the OPS stated purpose. Make sure you do not have a firearm or hunting weapon of any kind( crossbow etc) in your possession when using NV .Don't even have one in your trunk or anything just Make sure and leave them at home if you are going to use it to scout.
