I took my buddy for his first hunting trip today and we got lucky and he shot a nice young buck. Him and me were sitting on a ridge and we saw some does so I rattled and used a grunt call and he came out. Was about a 100 yard shot and he was bang on. 300 weatherby, 180gr tsx, 3200fps, dead deer. The bullet smashed the shoulder, hit the heart and lungs and exited of course. The deer went maybe 10 yards after being hit. He's hooked on hunting now and wants to go for spring bear with me

He shot his first deer and skinned it too. I talked him through it and did the holding for him. Not to bad for his first time :) Practice makes perfect.

300 wby might be a little much but the only one smaller I have is a 7mm RM and he was more familiar with the 300 wby from shooting it at the range.
 
I don't think the .300 Wby is too much. It's the fellow's first deer; he'll probably shoot the next one behind the shoulder, and there will be much less damage.

Congrats on introducing someone to hunting.
 
A wound like that is 1000 times better than a lost animal.
A slower pojectile is known to produce less meat damage, that's all.

the hair is usually removed with a torch.
 
I shot a little buck with my 300 wsm and the TSX bullet last week, the bullet passed through his spine removing about 4 inches of it, then proceeded to take out a 3" spruce tree about 15' behind the deer, then buried itself in the frozen ground behind the tree, pretty amazing penetration.
